**He finally found his place, and now it’s in jeopardy!**

The fourth feature film for the Kiwi director Taika Waititi. I loved all his films except the previous one, despite it was a famous title that the world loved, I’m not. So according to me this is a great comeback after a cheap vampire mockumentary. I was very confident that this would take up the New Zealand’s the Oscars slot and then disappointed to find it was not in the initial list released by the Academy. Anyway, it does not need a tag like that, it is really an awesome film for everyone, though the theme has some adult contents in an indirect manner and violence like killing the wild animals. That means still it can be watched by kids with their parents’ consent.

Watching it takes you to the location live, so you don’t want to end your vacation in the beautiful New Zealand wilderness which feels like untouched. It was nothing like you have seen in ‘The Lord of the Rings’ that altered with the computer tricks. This is raw and beautiful like the Tasmanian jungle from ‘The Hunter’.

This is the story of an orphan boy named Ricky Baker, who is a troublesome. Finally a family from the remote place adopts him where with the initial hiccups, he started to get used to it. But after one of the members dies in his new family, the child service wants him back. This is where it all begins, because he finally found a place where he belongs, but they are trying to take it away from him. So he launches his protest that comes from a mistake which later becomes a national news. What’s going to happen to him and the others around him told in the remaining part.

> “Sometimes in life it seems like there’s no way out. Like a sheep trapped in a maze designed by wolves.”

Seems Ricky is obsessed with the films. He always talks about them and compares his actual state of condition to the different films he had seen and admired. Especially about the gangsters, I think that’s why he became so rebellious, apart from his struggles in the orphanage. This film was based on the book called ‘Wild Pork and Watercress’ and I praise the author for creating a character like Ricky. As usual the screenplay by Taika Waititi was amazing. Not without the support from his crew and especially the actors like who played Ricky. So was the Sam Neill in an important role.

First of all it is a fun film, despite whatever they have shown in this like about the feud between the child service and the kid. The film kind of looks like Wes Anderson’s ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ without his signature. Except the initiation, what follows is quite aimless plot. So, not easy to predict the scenes, but somewhat we come to know the ending. It has to conclude either way, like happy or sad ending, or maybe both. But the overall film keeps us in the guessing mode, providing some laughs and thorough good entertainment.

It’s really an appealing title and so the equally satisfying film. Especially if you like wild and green landscape, you should not miss it. The story was told in chapters which actually did not require, but those slices were helped to understand each section and its focus. I think it was a direct influence from the original source.

The director is now on a big leap, doing a superhero film in the Hollywood. The third ‘Thor’ film, that reunites him with Sam Neill for the second consecutive time. I’m waiting for that which is going to be a visual extravaganza. He has done great with smaller films till now, which are mostly the comedies, but what comes is his biggest challenge so far and if he does pull it off successfully, he would be another Kiwi director in the big league after Peter Jackson. Praying to happen that. In the meantime, I recommend you to check this one out.

New Zealand has a long history of quirky movies, and _Hunt for the Wilderpeople_ is a great addition to the fold. Written and directed by Taika Waititi, this 2016 film stars Sam Neill and Julian Dennison. It was a big hit when it came out – off a $2.5M budget, it brought in $23.2M and entertained people all across the world.

So what’s it all about then? Here’s the description:

_Ricky is a defiant young city kid who finds himself on the run with his cantankerous foster uncle in the wild New Zealand bush. A national manhunt ensues, and the two are forced to put aside their differences and work together to survive._

I love hearing a Kiwi accent on screen, and hearing this and the NZ style humour brought many a smile to my face while watching this. Sam Neill has been a long time favourite of mine, right back from the days of _Reilly, Ace of Spies_. He plays the gruff uncle very well, and really captures the essence of the NZ farmer and bush man.

Likewise, Dennison is hilarious, and for a young kid has excellent comedic timing, which leads to many laugh out loud moments, be they from verbal sparring, or more of a physical nature. He’s great, and the chemistry between him and Neill is so good.

Of course, the theme of two people with clashing personalities being thrown together is nothing new, but what makes this stand out as a little different is the NZ twist. Kiwis have a weird sense of humour and Waititi, Neill, Dennison, and all the supporting characters bring this to the fore.

Its a good fun movie that with plenty of laughs, and will be sure to put a smile on your face.
Great watch, would watch again, and can recommend.

WARNING: Sad dog scene.

Julian Dennison (“Deadpool 2”) and Sam Neill (“Jurassic Park”) give an amazing performance as grumpy unlikeable pair of guys purposely lost in the wilderness.

For an “foster kid” trope, this movie really has it all. I don’t appreciate it’s attempt to mimic “Up!” and that did sour my opinion a bit. It starts, then waxes and wanes between drama and comedy.

You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, there is family love, romantic love, plenty of action, and more laughs.

**🦜 IT’S BIRDS OF PREY ” LITE ” : With Only – HALF – Its Delectably Whacky Trippy Neon Psychedelic Charm . . But -ALL- Of Its MINDLESS Dark Comics Style BRUTALITY & GORE 💥**

A “Good Old Fashioned” **- _B I G_ -** Screen Micro Review .

I’ll readily admit it. I set out to watch ‘Black Widow’ – again 😅 – , had the film’s timings wrong, and ended up watching ‘Birds ….ooops…. I mean ‘Gunpowder Milkshake’, ( ‘GM’ for short ), instead. But no, really, watch the -Official- trailer, and you’ll see what I mean ; the similarities, which permeate the ( -Entire- ) movie, are, ‘to put it mildly’ …really, really, really… – Stark – . ” _MENTIONS-OF-NOTE_ ” : 1 : The utterly – ADORABLE 💜 – pint sized thespian, Chloe Choleman ( “8¾ year old Emily” ) . . . she’s Twelve in real-life, and is simply a lovely, -Effusive- bundle of utter delight, and of course . . TALENT. 2 : Mild-spoiler : Keep your eyes peeled for the “Dracula gets killed by . . . ( why, a -Stake- Of course❗)” scene. In the classic Dark-comedy sense ; it simply could – Not – have been executed more ‘Perfectly’ .

” _DOWNSIDES_ ” : I guess I’m just going to have to  put this one down to a – Simple – case of : “not very good timing, at all”. In other words, on the one hand you have the USA being -Utterly- battered by a -Very- Deadly Pandemic . . . ‘no offence’ to Covid-19, but right now I’m actually referring to the ( TRULY ) Horrific ‘summer spike’ in **AMERICAN – GUN 🔫 – VIOLENCE . .** and on the other, you have a -US- ( ‘Gunpowder’s’ Country-of-origin is listed as ‘France, Germany, USA’ ) picture that -altogether- glorifies a – “seemingly endless” – spree of ‘Vividly gratuitous slaughter’ . . the likes of which I haven’t seen in a -serious- while. Not to mention the rather -glaring- “Birds Of Prey déjà-vu” aspect of exposing an -Actual- , innocent, young 12 ( -13½ in the case of ‘Birds Of Prey’- ) year old -BABYGIRL- ( and in a “prominent, Starring-Role”, at that ) to -that- level of Darkness & Violence, albeit thematic. And of course, the film -Does- have its fair share of “wanton” profanity, and the young child is – by no means – deaf, let’s not forget. Seriously . . . What kind of message does that send❓.

Summation : “Save some money”. Sure, the movie has its moments, & is even “SUPREMELY” funny in -Atleast- 2 or 3 places, let’s be clear. But in my humble opinion, if you’re -Not- ‘particularly’ crazy about this sub-genre, then ‘GM’ is, I’m afraid, – Not ⛔ – worth a special trip to the cinema, -Especially- with the ‘delta variant’ of Covid 19 -Still- wreaking some Serious “Mayhem” in so many, many, many parts of the world. So if you feel like this is a ‘must’ watch for you, then you should be -Just- fine streaming it on, say , Netflix, which, by the way, PRODUCED IT . . ‘ANYWAY’ . -All- things considered, then, that’s going to be an ‘Honest-to-goodness’ **7.00 Marks Out Of 10.00** from me, because that’s – REALLY ✅ – . . . as far as high as I can go with ‘Gunpowder Milkshake’, all things considered .
Gunpowder Milkshake movie is stylish, beautiful, action-packed, violent, and funny. The action sequence was a mixture of John Wick and Jackie Chan.

Director Navot Papushado and Cinematographer Michael Seresin transform a generic script into a blast. There was a smart use of a camera and lightning. The music, color grading, costumes, makeup, production design, and the whole atmosphere was brilliant.

I loved the library scenario and the classic literature language used for the guns. It reminds me of the John Wick movie.

The script was decent and predictable to some extent but the direction and Cinematography made it more interesting. Also, I can’t forget the funny fighting moments. So It’s a must-watch movie.

Tomorrowland 2015 Online Subtitrat in Romana

Tomorrowland Online Subtitrat in Romana – [1080p]

Tomorrowland

calificativ : Tomorrowland
: 2015-05-19
arhivare : 130 Minutes
compoziţie : Adventure, Family, Mystery, Science Fiction

I have to say that I quite enjoyed Tomorrowland despite its way too common mistake of being quite a bit nonsensically preachy to satisfy the current politically correct view of what is “wrong” with the world today. Filtering out those parts this is a quite enjoyable, visually very entertaining, family movie. If you have strong opinions about certain things then you might want to be with your kids when watching this one. Personally I consider my oldest son to be quite capable of making his own opinions and as for the two younger kinds I try to point out the pro’s and con’s and let them grow up to make their own mistakes.

Having that out of the way this is a visually quite wonderful movie. it is of course quite CGI enhanced but in a good way. It is a Disney movie after all so you would expect, at least I did, some “artistic freedom” as far as the scenery is concerned.

The story is actually a quite lovely “fairy tale” kind of story about a “wonderland” far far away. Initially it is a wee bit difficult to get a grip of what is happening since it all moves about all over the place a bit. If you can overcome that first disorientation it does indeed get somewhat sensible after a while. Having said that I mean “sensible” in the context of not only a wild and whacky science fiction movie but in the context of a wild and wacky science fiction movie aimed at the younger part of the audience. Despite the scientific blurb thrown around in the last half of the movie do not for a minute believe that any of the script writers have more scientific knowledge than the average Hollywood script writer which is…zero.

To me the enjoyment of this movie came from the childish fantasy style (it does have quite a bit of a fairly tale story over it), from the rather enjoyable cinematic effects, quite a bit of cool action and last but not least … George Clooney. Actually that is not entirely fair. George was part of it but what I really liked was the recruiting android all the way from the start. When Clooney entered the scene both him and the android pretty much stole the scene. I am afraid that the Newton girl, for a lot of the time, felt more like a “plot element” than a main character to me.

I have to say that I quite liked the scenes in Paris as well. Sorry guys but I do live in France after all. The Eiffel Tower scenes where quite enjoyable and I do like the touch where they used Mr. Eiffel’s apartment at the top of the tower as a scenery. Actually I am not sure how many people actually know that there is an apartment (now a museum) up there. The stuff about a hidden room and a hidden [naah, that would be a spoiler] beneath the tower is of course truly nonsensical.

So, bottom line, if Disney would not have gone down the line of trying to make a political statement, and I do not care what that statement was except that it was blunt, obvious and unconcealed, then this movie would have gotten another star or two. I cannot justify giving it much lower than what I did since it was, technically speaking, a quite good and entertaining movie. However, movies for children is not the medium to make a statement unless you believe that you are living in a socialist state a ‘la the Soviet Union.
Wish it was greater, but for what it is it’s still enjoyable.

‘Tomorrowland’ is an intriguing futuristic film, it doesn’t really delve as deep into its potential-filled premise as it should but it scratches the surface and it makes for – just about – solid viewing. The special effects are very nice, also.

As for the casting, I guess it could’ve been better. However, I did like the main quartet of Britt Robertson (Casey), George Clooney (Frank), Raffey Cassidy (Athena) and Hugh Laurie (David) – the latter has a good rant late on. I rate the way the story is told, mostly in retrospective by Robertson and Clooney – it keeps it interesting.

I just feel more should’ve been done with this, given it’s fairly entertaining even in its current state and has a load of potential. Either way, I did narrowly like it.

The Lion King 2019 Online Subtitrat in Romana

The Lion King Online Subtitrat in Romana – [1080p]

The Lion King

cap : The Lion King

arhivare : 118 Minutes

‘The Lion King’ is a catastrophe; a new low in the ever-diminishing returns of Disney’s endless run of remakes. There’s nothing redeeming about it, with every decision either ill-conceived or mishandled to the point of incompetence. In Favreau’s hands, ‘The Lion King’ is rendered thunderously dull, lacking in any tension or complex characterisation, taking a laboriously long time to go nowhere and never once justifying its contentious existence. Even with my dislike of the original, I was flabbergasted at how thoroughly this film never attempts to understand why so many people love the 1994 film. If nothing else, this film makes it abundantly clear that Disney has no interest in making great cinema or honouring its own legacy. They don’t care whether the film is good or whether you enjoy it. All they care about is using nostalgia to trick you into buying your ticket so they can make as much money off you as they can, and maybe if they throw some recognisable iconic moments from your childhood on the screen, they may even be able to fool you into thinking you’d had a good time. ‘The Lion King’ is the ultimate diabolical apex of the commercialisation of nostalgia, and its inevitable box office success will just prove how easily we continue to be duped and how thoroughly they have trained us to not care about the quality of what we see. If this really is the future of mainstream cinema, then we are in serious, serious trouble.

If you enjoy reading my Spoiler-Free reviews, please follow my blog 🙂

I don’t know how I should start, but I guess I’ll address something that people might ask: yes, it’s a SPOILER-FREE review. Why? Well, the story might follow the same essential plot points, and the characters might have similar narrative paths, but there are so many details that make this movie stand on its own. From tiny little improvements to moments of the original that wouldn’t make sense in a realistic environment to adjustments to character’s backstory, musical moments or other significant parts. With that said, I need to discuss the controversy surrounding this remake, but I won’t take longer than one paragraph.

People need to understand that these Disney’s remakes aren’t here to replace the originals. They’re here to honor them, and bring their stories and characters to this new century so that new generations can have an additional look at something they love, and 90s kids can remember why they love these films so much. Emphasis on the “additional” part of that sentence. Then, people also need to get their preferences right: would you want to watch a shot-for-shot remake or something entirely different? Or a blend of these two? If you don’t know what you want, you might be in danger of turning into a hypocrite if your speech goes from “I don’t want these copy-paste remakes” to “they changed that specific moment, why didn’t they keep it the same?” Just be clear on what you wish. If you simply don’t want Disney to do these remakes, then just don’t watch them. Don’t go online try to beat it to the ground with negative comments if you haven’t seen the movie. Moving on …

I love it. I absolutely love it. I cried the exact same 4 times as I did in the 1994’s original. My whole body got chills during the opening sequence, which is one of a few things I love more about the remake than in the original. It’s NOT a shot-for-shot remake! I don’t understand how so many critics are calling it so. Either people’s memory of the original faded or someone clearly didn’t watch the same film. I can write a whole review of 1000+ words just describing the new stuff. Of course, the story goes through the same iconic moments in the same way, and some dialogues are extensively repeated, which was something that I was hoping they developed more. Despite that, I still feel that the scripts have a different take on it from the voice actors, even James Earl Jones.

One proof would be that I cried on a scene that I never felt like it in the original. I don’t know if it was how it was shot (one of the various different angles that the remake provides of known scenes) or if the dialogue just has more impact this time around, but the point here is that this remake is NOT a cheap copy-paste. I always look forward to seeing what they come up with to solve or adjust some questions that the originals leave us with. Let me just write that Jeff Nathanson has some truly brilliant changes/additions. Remember people criticizing Scar’s look when the first teaser came out? With just ONE WORD, its entire physical shape, scar, and past are explained. One word. Imagine that. There are little elements like adding a word or a sentence here and there, and it makes so much more sense with the character or the story in question.

Speaking of Scar, Chiwetel Ejiofor is astonishing. Scar might be my favorite character of the remake. He’s more menacing and scarier, his voice is darker, and his arc is better explored. Jeremy Irons will always have that iconic voice associated with the character, but Ejiofor did a crazily good job in replacing him. However, if there’s one voice that I could never watch another actor do is Mufasa’s. I have no words to express how emotionally powerful James Earl Jones’ voice is. As soon as he says “Simba” in the reflection scene, my eyes drop waterfalls. His voice is an emotional trigger, let’s call it that. I love Timon (Billy Eichner) and Pumbaa (Seth Rogen) even more this time around. Their scenes are hilarious, and the characters’ relationship keeps being a standout. Oh, and if you were worried that the hula scene would never be as good let alone surpassed … You might need to rethink that. Also, I enjoyed the stretched last act (I found the original’s final battle too abrupt), and I would advise parents to be careful showing this remake to (very) young kids since the violence on display feels much more real (duh).

JD McCrary and Shahadi Wright-Joseph (young Nala) are amazing, and their voices are crystal clear while singing. Donald Glover and Beyoncé (adult Nala) are also terrific, and their voices are even better. The new music Spirit fits better in this remake than Speechless in Aladdin. Moving on to the music, it’s another aspect that I genuinely think the remake does better. Hans Zimmer proves that he can bring an old score of his back to life in a much more robust, epic, and passionate way. Every song feels more prominent, every soundtrack feels a lot more impactful and stronger. Be Prepared is the only one that goes through a significant change, and while it might sound a bit strange at first, I love it more each time I listen to it. It’s a score that will never be forgotten, and this remake just helped people remember how great it is. Oscar-winning score.

I left the best to last: the visuals. I can’t possibly describe how impressive and eyegasmic the CGI is. Animals talking was never an issue (people keep sharing GIFs or short clips and immediately started complaining that it looked awkward … a 30-seconds video without context watched on a laptop will never give you a hint of how the movie will actually be). Yes, the expressiveness of the original animation can’t be achieved, but going as far as saying that the film lacks soul or that the characters don’t emote is just inaccurate. You don’t need a PhD to understand that a lion with its ears down or up means different things. There are tiny little movements in the animals that are so complex that I’m still astounded how they were able to do it. If a bug flies near their faces, they flinch or move in such a characteristic way that I felt like I was truly watching real animals. Once again, Oscar-winning VFX.

I don’t really have major problems with it. Minor gripes with a few things, but the biggest one would be the lack of more uniqueness. There’s no element of surprise in regards to the story or the character’s decisions. We always know what’s coming, so we’re prepared (no pun intended) for anything they through at us because, well, we’ve seen it before (with the exception of one particular scene that made me jump out of my chair and I think not a single person will be able to avoid it). I find the “animals don’t emote” argument one of the biggest nitpicks in the history of cinema. It might be true that they lack the emotion of the original animation, but going as far as saying that they show absolutely no emotion is just hating for the sake of hate. Same goes for people criticizing the fact that Can You Feel the Love Tonight is sung during broad daylight … In the original, it isn’t nighttime as well.

Finally, I just want to address the “these remakes aren’t necessary / no one asked for these” discussion. No one asked for the 1994’s movie until it came out. People didn’t know they needed it. Seriously, everyone needs to realize that these remakes aren’t here to replace the originals. How many of you have watched The Lion King (1994) or showed it to someone in the past 10 years? How many times have you heard its score in the same period? I bet that most of the answers are simply “none”. That’s how important this remake is then! It makes you go back, it makes everyone remember how incredible the 1994’s film is, by keeping its essence while being able to stand on its own. Jon Favreau did a tremendous job, and I hope he gets recognized for it.

In the end, it doesn’t matter if the story is identical if we cry all the same. It doesn’t matter if we know what’s coming if we still feel nervous and worried about the characters. The Lion King (2019) is one of Disney’s best remakes so far, on par with The Jungle Book. Its VFX are game-changing, its score is more powerful and emotional than in the original, and the story carries the same heartfelt impact. James Earl Jones’ voice is everything. Timon and Pumbaa are even funnier. Ejiofor’s Scar is the best character in this remake. I have no flaws to point out, except that it follows the exact same path that the original’s story does. I wish it would be more distinct, but I can’t lie to myself, I love it deeply. One of 2019’s best movies. My #1 spot will be hard to decide… Go watch it! I can’t wait to see it again!

Rating: A
_Vulgar Display of Dour_

_Final rating:★½: – Boring/disappointing. Avoid where possible._
**Its not as bad as Cats or Star Wars 9.**

Disappointing and inconsistent. 2019 seems to be the year where the big movies were made to look good, but are in reality vapid and this is no exception.
This looks good mostly (except when Simba is a “teenager” and a lack of genitals means that the animals do not look really real), but everything else is below average. Also, the “real-ness” of the animals make some scenes way more scary for children.

The choices made in this are….strange.
-The voice casting is weird (some African sounding, some American, and others in between) – like there was no plan.
-Extra scenes and dialogue do not add to the movie and even lessen it when compared to its predecessor.
-The way the songs have been re-done/ recorded are just wrong and **this is the first Zimmer score that I have not liked** in….forever (it feels like he just phoned it in).
-And a baby warthog suddenly appears at the end near Pumba, but no mother…WTF?
There is still a plot though, so there’s that… which means its better than the shambles that was Rise of Skywalker or Cats.

Yet another movie to forget.
Not at all like the cartoon but not bad either. Let’s face it, nothing the could do would or could match the Lion King cartoon original. NOTHING. So I have been a huge fan of Lion King since day one. I knew this would not be as good. There are parts i adore and parts i detest. I hate they left out Scar’s song and only had a small clip… So much was left out. It COULD have been better but I really didnt expect it to be half as good as the original… I was surprised it was decent.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

This movie is very good I loved it so much.
This is indeed a great piece of superhero entertainment. If superheroes and action, plenty of action, is within your sphere of interest then this movie truly delivers. There is even a story to support the stunts and special effects fireworks that is not too shabby. As a matter of fact, for being a Marvel-based movie, the story is more than acceptable.

As the blurb states, our hero is meeting a few adaptation issues after having been awaken into the modern world. Luckily the movie do not fall into the trap of making some silly comedy out of it but keeps these parts at a reasonable level where it stays funny without ruining the movie or disrupting the pace of the real story.

The story? Simple and not very original with the usual slew of traitors strewn about, you cannot trust anyone, our hero becomes a fugitive etc etc bla bla bla. It is however a pretty straightforward one which works quite well and is not getting bogged down in silly emotions and general idiotic behavior by our hero like for instance several instalments of Spider Man have done. Actually this is one thing that I really like with this movie. The hero is a true hero from start to finish without any of that modern Hollywood crap where the hero must be tarnished in one way or another to satisfy the directors and producers.

As I wrote above if you like superhero action movies then there is little not to like with this one. Acceptable story, plenty of action, good special effects, a cool chick (hey I am but an ordinary male, I like female actors in tight costumes) and a clear hero. None of the actors are really doing a bad job of it and in general the acting is as good as one can expect when portraying characters that, after all, are be totally ludicrous in real life. Its 8 out of 10 rating at IMDb (at the time of writing this) is well deserved. I am astonished that some people seem to have voted it down with a one star rating. It is a Marvel-based movie. You might feel it is more or less good but the style of the movie should not really be a major surprise to anyone and there is no way in hell that it deserves a one star rating unless someone really watched the wrong movie by accident.
Put *a little* bit of brain in a superhero’s movie script and you will have everybody talking wonders about it.

This is not a bad movie but neither astonishing. Fun and entertaining and with great FX, as expected.
The Winter Soldier has all the action, quirky one-liners, and bold adventure that we have come to expect of a Marvel movie.

Plus we get introduced to a new/old villain as well as some fun romantic tension between Steve Rogers (Captain America) and Natasha Romanoff (The Black Widow). (Scarlett Johansson is perfect in this role.)

But this film also has some minor irritations all stemming from Marvel’s tendency to make _Captain America_ more complicated than it really needs to be.

MINOR SPOILER ALERT:
1. The love story/non-story. Is this necessary? Will the Captain remain faithful to a 80 year-old woman on her deathbed OR engage in a date with his next door neighbor? Plus the tension between him and Natasha Romanoff is intense. This comes off as forced, awkward, and pointless.

2. “The deception goes deeper than you can imagine. You can’t trust anybody.” It’s this way every time so it should no longer be a surprise.

3. He’s dead but not really. Not him, the other him. Well…they both were dead – not really – but now they are both alive. But one of them can’t remember who he really is. In this film we get to do this with two characters instead of one. It’s not a huge distraction but why does Marvel keep returning to this plot line?

END OF MINOR SPOILER ALERT

The Winter Soldier is best when Rogers and Romanoff are on the move trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together. The explosions are nice, the action scenes are intense but the real enjoyment of the film is where skill and wits are relied on more than gadgets and explosions.

Patriotism is a bit more nuanced this time around and it’s better for it. The cast is great, no awkward acting moments to report. It’s a great summer flick with all the action you want.
Till the end of the road.

Stonking! Now this is more like it, after the disappointments that have been Iron Man 2 and Thor 2, Captain America gets a sequel of substance and sparks. It manages to blend everything required to make a great superhero film, lashings of derring-do heroics, action bonanza, adventure, some sexy sizzle and of course the key, a story with brains and mystery elements.

True enough to say that the considerable contributions of Black Widow and Falcon (and Nick Fury of course) keeps this as a lively Avengers spin-off movie, which is no bad thing at all, but it’s still the Captain who dominates things, marking himself out as a viable main man. In fact the whole film has the old school comic book feel, yes there’s the grandiose pyrotechnics – unsurprisingly amped up for the big finale, but there’s an adherence to serial thriller conventions that is, well, rather warm and comforting.

With the Captain getting some surprising amount of emotional depth and humanity courtesy of the perfectly cast Chris Evans, the viewers have much to care about. Themes of Bondian world domination and global security crisis keep things nice and fanciful, while the unheralded work by the effects guys is modern cinematic art. There’s some adherence to genre formula, and a bit of Marvel universe copy-catting going on, but this is one of the best films from the Marvel stable. A rich sequel indeed – more Captain America please. 9/10
**A long format review from 2014**

Misleadingly, the titular Winter Soldier is essentially a minor subplot in what is more of an espionage-technoir-thriller meets spectacle-epic than your typical super hero film. The real meat of the movie, thankfully, has some more substance behind it. Though it wouldn’t surprise me if we learn later that Sebastian Stan’s villain was forced to take a back seat via last minute script changes à la Hawkeye in _The Avengers_.

These things are of course a matter of opinion, and I’d like to watch _Winter Soldier_ at least once more (particularly in 2D… God do I ever hate 3D) before committing to any particular ranking. But even without that, I feel confident in saying it’s the best MCU Phase 2 film to date. We must await _Guardians of The Galaxy_ and _Age of Ultron_ before cementing that little award, but I’d say that it stands at the very least above _Iron Man 3_ and _The Dark World_.

I always try to keep my reviews spoiler free, but being that in most parts of the world it isn’t out yet, I’ll be extra careful to do so with this one. This makes talking about _Winter Soldier_ on its own merits difficult, but there are certainly a few things that can be said.

Chris Evans (Cap’), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) and to a slightly lesser extent. Anthonie Mackie (Falcon) rule the film, and do so without any shortcomings. That’s not to say that they couldn’t physically have done any better, but their roles were all seamless as far as my blurred vision could tell, which is not an accolade I’d often give.

Where _The Dark World_ was simply a holding pattern for Thor with some very pretty pictures, _Iron Man 3_ and _The Winter Soldier_ went out and took some actual risks in their stories. But unlike _Iron Man 3’s_, Winter Soldier’s risks have (to its eternal credit) been universally well received.

Directors Joe and Anthony Russo also managed to cameo a couple of Community alumni, which will never be a bad thing in my eyes, even if they’re just one-off, throwaway jokes.

As I said, I really feel I need to give _The Winter Soldier_ at the very least one more screening before I feel totally confident in my thoughts about it.

But the fact that I’m really fucking excited for that second viewing speaks in its favour if nothing else does.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens up with an action sequence that’s better than most action movie climaxes. It then sets up a really intriguing story before launching into one of the most suspenseful car chases since the Simpson/Bruckheimer 90s era. After that it’s scene after scene of amazing action coupled with a complex story about heroes and villains being caught in a system that is too big to bring down, unless you’re as good and level headed as Steve Rogers.

This isn’t just a great comic book movie. It’s a great movie; period. Using a spy thriller style mixed with martial arts and gunplay, set to the perfect music score, I would rank The Winter Soldier as one of my favourite action films hands down.
Third time seeing this and still a fantastic all-around film, not just a comic book movie either. Briskly paced and a great complex story, this is a Marvel movie that felt complete from beginning to end, and actually advanced the universe so well. Chris Evans continues to embody the role and nice to see Scarlett Johansson given more to do (up to the point of this film’s release) than in Iron Man 2 or The Avengers. **4.75/5**

I probably rate this right alongside The Dark Knight amongst comic book movies and, saying this as a DC fan, perhaps edges out TDK (though could easily seeing roles reversed once I re-watch that one).
Entertaining!

‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ makes for an enjoyable flick. Chris Evans does great work as the lead character, while Scarlett Johansson gives her most fun to watch performance in the MCU up until this point; it would’ve been great if she had such a role pre-‘The Avengers’, so she wouldn’t have felt so out of place to me in that.

Anthony Mackie and Robert Redford are notable in their respective roles, as is Sebastian Stan – even if, to be honest, his character’s connection with the lead didn’t quite hit as hard as the film attempts – at least for me. I didn’t really believe how his character came about and how Barnes acts throughout, Stan does well though. Samuel L. Jackson is also good.

Everything else is exactly what you’d expect from a film of this size. Great effects, entertaining action and a satisfying story. Very good, all in all.
Picking up from his rather frosty denouement of 2011, “Capt. America” (Chris Evans) finds himself seventy years older but still with battles to fight. This time, he teams up with “Nick Fury” (Samuel L. Jackson) and his SHIELD agent “Natasha” (Scarlet Johansson) to combat the ruthless warrior known only as the “Winter Soldier”. It doesn’t take us long to discover that there is quite conspiracy going on too – with an attempt on the life of “Fury” before off we go on a roller-coaster ride of action adventure scenarios. The effects are great and the score works well to help keep the break-neck pace working well and excitingly. Evans is still just a little too pretty-boy for me, but the developing roles of Anthony Mackie, Johansson and a few cameos from the somewhat duplicitous “Pierce” (Robert Redford) all contribute well to make this a superior adventure film with a strong and characterful story underpinning it. It hasn’t quite the charm of the first film, so I wouldn’t say it is better – but it is certainly just as good, and as with the first outing, the 2¼ hours just flies by. Great cinema.

‘Sound of Metal’ is a unique cinematic experience that has consumed my every thought in the days since my viewing, and should be on the radars of anyone wanting to catch one of the best films this year. If you’re lucky enough to get the opportunity to see it on a big screen, take it as soon as you can. Movies like this do not come around very often.

With moderately high expectations, Sound of Metal genuinely surprised me. Darius Marder and Abraham Marder’s exquisite screenplay is the absolute standout, at the same insanely good level as Riz Ahmed’s impressive performance. The former holds a meaningful, enlightening story about not only the deaf community but also about accepting our limitations as something that’s a part of us instead of taking it as a handicap. Except for a couple of unnecessary scenes that could have made the movie a bit shorter, the two-hour duration is quite fair, boasting a very captivating narrative.

Countless storytelling technical details elevate this film into one of the best of the year. From an apparently simple yet extremely clever use (or absence) of subtitles for sign language to emotionally compelling dialogues, an outstandingly realistic atmosphere surrounds the movie throughout the entire runtime. Never, not even for a second, the viewer needs to deal with an over-the-top reaction, cheesy conversation, or a typical Hollywood, overdramatized moment. Darius Marder has terrific control of the tone, keeping it exceptionally grounded.

Riz Ahmed delivers what I believe is his career-best display, incorporating his character’s hearing disability in a seamless fashion. His subtle facial expressions and body movements are essential for the performance that can easily guarantee him dozens of nominations. Olivia Cooke (Lou) is also excellent in her role. Technically, huge praise to Daniël Bouquet’s cinematography, which insists on an almost documentary-style composition by applying standard camera angles and shots often seen in this type of feature, helping to generate the before-mentioned authenticity.

One of my absolute favorite films of 2020.

Rating: A
Highly recommend!

Riz Ahmed gives an incredible performance as Ruben, not only did he make me care immensely for the character but he also makes Ruben feel like a real person. You can tell he put a tonne of effort into this and it really does show.

Away from Ahmed, Olivia Cooke (Lou) and Paul Raci (Joe) are also very good performers, while it’s nice to see Lauren Ridloff (Diane) involved – she’s great in ‘The Walking Dead’, while she is soon to be in the MCU’s ‘Eternals’ as well.

So much heart to this. I couldn’t possibly say with 100% certainty for obvious reasons, but it seems to do a terrific job at telling the story that it intends to. That’s not always the case, so the filmmakers deserve praise for that – as well as for the sound design et al.

‘Sound of Metal’ is worthy of the hype, no question.
