Not watching trailers has infinite pros. From going into the theater without a visual clue about what’s going to be seen on the big screen to the ability to avoid spoilery clips that ruin supposedly surprising moments, this is a methodology I’ve been strictly employing in my life. So far, I’ve had nothing but spectacular screenings. Watching a movie completely blind is an experience I recommend to every film lover. This intro serves to explain why I was so impressed by Pig’s grounded, action-less, character-driven storytelling.

Without watching any trailer, just by reading the synopsis, it’s impossible not to expect an absurdly crazy revenge flick starring the one and only Nicolas Cage (Prisoners of the Ghostland). Well, Michael Sarnoski delivers a subversive directorial debut, focusing on the always heavy theme of grief. Cage’s character is a retired chef who lost someone he truly loved, and the (adorable) pig is the only living being he can associate with his former lover. Instead of following an action-heavy, bloody path of murder to help deal with his emotional loss like John Wick, Pig draws attention to the protagonist’s feelings.

It’s a wonderfully written character piece, featuring a beautiful score (Alexis Grapsas, Philip Klein), and incredibly captivating, unforgettable dialogues that replace the expected action sequences. Cage offers one of the most nuanced performances of his career, proving he’s one of the most talented actors of his generation. It’s a shame that most people only recognize him as Hollywood’s main source of memes. Alex Wolff (Hereditary) is also outstanding as a young man with father issues, though his character’s subplot isn’t as interesting as the main narrative, slightly affecting the overall pacing.

Despite anticipating several action scenes, the lack thereof didn’t result in disappointment but instead in a pleasant surprise. Highly recommend checking this one if you have the chance.

Rating: B+
Pig is a drama and thriller. The story is real, authentic, touching, and emotional. Such Individual movies are known as “Cinema” and are the building blocks of the Hollywood Industry. Such movies aren’t considered worthy of watching and praising just because they don’t belong from a Franchise or Studio.

I love watching such movies but only a few movies touch me deeply in this genre like Joker 2019 and the Pursuit of Happiness were my favorite individual movies.

I watched this movie but I didn’t find its story epic. Yes, it was a good and decent story but as I said that in this genre, only a few movies can touch my heart but unfortunately pig wasn’t among all that.

But But But… the character of Nicolas Cage is just amazing in this movie and an Oscar-winning character. His character development was too good and his performance was just excellent. I would only suggest you watch this movie for Nicola’s performance.

The scene where the protagonist was confronting a specific character in a hotel was outstanding. It’s an emotional story of a man dealing with his past and present loss. You would love it if you love such poetic movies. But this movie isn’t for everyone.
With this starring Nic Cage, you would think it’ll be a thriller with the same vibe of John Wick…and you would be sorta right.

This movie was a drama first and thriller second as we go on a journey for the main character’s (Rob) pig while we explored the past of Rob and Amir’s lives. There was no graphic violence, no cage rage, and no insane scenes. Like Arnold Schwarzenegger in the movie Maggie (2015), this showed Cage as a raw performer which we rarely see these days.

With that said, there will be comedic moments but nothing goofy or silly. This story played on the emotions and connections the main character had toward others. If you went into this movie wanting action and Cage being a crazy individual, this won’t be a good watch for you. The direction, story, and performance were all great. It did set a tone throughout and this was Michael Sarnoski’s directorial debut.

Overall…this movie was something I didn’t expected and it was pretty damn good. This movie might not be for everyone but it was definitely a good one in my book. Especially that ending. Go into this without any knowledge of what to expect.
A great performance from Nicolas Cage. The story was engaging in the first half of the movie and then sort of dissipates into a search.
We have waited quite a log time for this, but finally we have a film from Nicolas Cage (“Rob”) into which he appears to have put some effort – and it works. He lives in the wilderness with his truffle hunting pig. Remote and isolated, his only contact with the outside world is when he meets his dealer “Amir” (Alex Wolff) who swaps the fungi for essential supplies. When his pig goes missing, “Rob” proves determined and inventive as he tries to track down its whereabouts. As the sub-plots develop, we discover there is substantially more to the character than that of just a porcine detective, and as the relationship between himself and the younger man develops, we learn more about what drove this man to seek his life of solitude. At times poignant, violent, pathetic and entertaining this film is a good showcase for an actor going back to basics – quite literally, and the handsome Wolff proves a decent enough conduit for him to tell us his story. I wasn’t mad on the ending, but it is not really what I expected either.
That’ll do.

‘Pig’ is a good film, made very good by its conclusion – which threw me, to be honest. I wasn’t, up until that moment, overly invested in the story, but when the reality hits home I actually felt my stomach sink for Nicolas Cage’s Robin – unexpected!

Cage does put in a neat display, I enjoyed his performance throughout. Alex Wolff and Adam Arkin add positive bits in their respective roles, too. It’s a 2021 flick that is well paced, well shot and well told. Recommended.
On the surface _Pig_ is a basic story of a man on the search for his lost pig, but underneath the initial layer is a deep and compelling character study on love and loss.

In the beginning, Rob and Amir start off as distant business partners, with not much relationship other than their weekly transaction. As the film unfolds, the audience begins to discover more about each character’s past and motivations, and in doing so an intimate connection form with them both. The viewer cares about Rob and wants to see him reunited with his pet. During this same time, a parallel is created between the audience and Amir as a distant stranger becomes a friend. I found it so gripping the way we know nothing about Rob, as he seems to be an outcast and a loner that no one really knows about at all, but there is more than meets the eye with him. That mystery is one of the strongest aspects of the film and the payoff is incredibly satisfying.

Nicholas Cage is absolutely fantastic in this role. Cage has very few lines throughout the entire film, as he is very reserved and closed off, but still is able to take command of every scene he is in. The way he broods over everyone and analyzes the situation is incredibly engaging and you can tell that he has a strong familiarity with the area. That is not to say Cage does not display his full range of acting abilities here, as his emotional scenes are captivating. I never thought a movie could make me tear up about a man’s connection with a pig, but he pulled it off effortlessly with his performance. The chemistry between Cage and Alex Wolff is fantastic. The two really evolve as a pair and the transformation of their relationship is very believable and done incredibly well.

While the film has some slow moments, it is still able to engage the audience throughout its 90-minute runtime. The writing is fantastic and will deliver some very great twists that the audience will not see coming. _Pig_ is a fantastic film, and anyone remotely interested should give it a try.

**Grade:** _88%_

**Verdict:** _Excellent_

A Simple Favor

titlu  : A Simple Favor

gen muzical : Crime, Thriller, Mystery, Comedy

First and foremost, this film feels like someone went to their local grocery store, grabbed a random three-dollar mystery novel off the checkout shelf, and decided to make it a movie with some extremely popular and attractive people. In other words, it’s a silly mystery movie with crazy, zany twists and turns.

Some of those twists and turns were easy enough to see coming, but some of them were straight out of left field. In addition to the entertaining twists, the film does a decent job of not taking itself seriously. The humor in the movie is peppered in during great moments. Some of it is cheesy, but if you’re going to this film for a deep, thought-provoking film, don’t.

The characters themselves are all extremely exaggerated. Lively’s Emily is over-the-top sophisticated, crass, and private to the point where she won’t allow pictures or even paintings of her face. Kendrick’s Stephanie is bubbly, eager, awkward, and overly friendly. The rest of the cast fills in the needs around them, and while the cast is filled with one-note characters, they fulfill the needs well. Golding’s Sean was my least favorite, but mainly because he doesn’t have a defined archetype in a film filled with single-aspect characters.

The biggest issue with the film is the plot itself. Emily contradicts herself with the motive for her faking her own death. She tells Sean that she did it for him and for Nicky. Then she says she did it for her. On top of it all, she doesn’t appear to have a plan to get the insurance money after it comes through. The film could have easily alleviated all of these issues with a quick scene or a line about fake passports for Emily and Nicky.

All in all, A Simple Favor is a fun romp filled with crazy twists and turns, humor, and great acting. Don’t think too much about the film itself, and just go have some fun. It’s definitely worth a getaway matinee.
I **really** don’t know what vibe _A Simple Favor_ was going for, but I know I kinda liked it.

_Final rating:★★★ – I liked it. Would personally recommend you give it a go._
_**Stylish, self-aware, and hilarious – a (mostly) enjoyable parody**_

>_My mother used to say: Everyone has secrets. That’s why you can never really know anyone else. Or trust anyone. It’s why you can never know yourself. Sometimes we even keep secrets from ourselves. Growing up, I thought that was good advice, although I didn’t completely understand it. Or maybe I did, a little. Kids have secrets. The imaginary friends, the things they’d get in trouble for if a grown-up ever found out._

>_Later I discovered that Mom was speaking from personal experience. And I wonder if she was not jus__t preparing me but programming me for secrecy and mistrust. Did she sense that I would grow up to have darker and more shameful secrets than anyone else’s? Secrets I mostly manage to keep – even from myself?_

– Darcey Bell; _A Simple Favour_ (2017)

Examining the rotten core beneath the surface urbanity of suburbia is something that has attracted filmmakers as diverse as Alfred Hitchcock (_Shadow of a Doubt_), David Lynch (_Blue Velvet_ and _Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me_), Joe Dante (_The ‘Burbs)_, Gus Van Sant (_To Die For_), and Frank Oz (_The Stepford Wives_). More recently, novels such as Gillian Flynn’s 2012 novel, _Gone Girl_ (and David Fincher’s 2014 filmic adaptation), have expanded and popularised the suburban noir genre; the very genre that _A Simple Favour_’s satirical excesses primarily target. A comedic look at the lives of two young mothers in an affluent American suburb, coupled with a mystery plot, the film has an undeniable identity crisis due to its genre mash-up characteristics (it’s a comic/satirical suburban noir murder mystery thriller). Although director Paul Feig proves adept at handling the parodic side of things, in the latter stages, he seems to be trying to ensure the film can exist (relatively) un-ironically within the very genre it’s attempting to lampoon. And he doesn’t particularly succeed. Despite this schizophrenic quality, however, the interplay between the two leads, the heavy stylisation, the playfully self-aware nature of the aesthetic, and the success of the burlesque elements all serve to make the film undeniably entertaining.

Adapted by Jessica Sharzer from Darcey Bell’s 2017 novel, _A Simple Favour_ tells the story of Stephanie Smothers (Anna Kendrick), a widowed single-mum who runs a life hacks vlog with minimal viewership. Overzealous in her desire to be liked, to the point where she’s deeply unlikable, Stephanie is the kind of person who signs up for every volunteer project at her son’s school, and then feigns surprise when she’s told she can only work on one at a time. Enter Emily Nelson (Blake Lively), a public relations executive for a major fashion label. When Miles (Joshua Satine) and Nicky (Ian Ho), Stephanie and Emily’s sons, respectively, ask for a playdate, Emily is initially unenthusiastic. However, she acquiesces, and she and Stephanie are soon bonding over increasingly strong martinis and girl chats, with Stephanie in awe of Emily, who seems to have it all; a good-looking novelist/lecturer husband, Sean (Henry Golding), a gorgeous house, a successful career, a great kid, and an acerbic attitude that Stephanie would kill for. However, all is not as perfect as it first seems; there are not insignificant financial problems; when Stephanie takes a photograph of Emily, Emily reacts angrily, demanding Stephanie delete it; although she and Sean have a great physical relationship, there isn’t much else there, with Emily frustrated that his only successful novel was published over ten years ago. Several weeks later, with Emily held up at work, she asks Stephanie to pick up Nicky, and she’ll collect him later. Except she doesn’t collect him. As a few days go by, and no one seems to know where Emily is, Stephanie and Sean report her missing. However, unsatisfied with the direction the investigation is taking, Stephanie is soon amateur sleuthing her way across the country in an effort to track down her friend.

Obviously taking inspiration from suburban-based “mommy murder mysteries” such as _Gone Girl_ and Paula Hawkins’s 2012 _The Girl on the Train_, as well as films such as Stanley Donen’s _Charade_ (1963), _A Simple Favour_ is at its best when working as a parody/satire of such narratives, its own source material included. From what little I know of the book, it seems as if everything is played straight, with little discernible sense of sarcasm, even as the plot twists become ever more ludicrous. With this in mind, it makes sense that the filmmakers have elected to adapt such un-ironically thrashy material in a more self-reflexive manner, as this facilitates the gentle (and often not so gentle) ribbing of the genre, exposing some of its more ill-conceived and unrealistic tropes to ridicule. For example, the three main characters are all standard generic templates to the point of cliché; the _ingénue_ who feels honour-bound to do everything she can to find the truth, no matter the cost, ultimately learning as much about herself as anything else; the sardonic, caustic, and utterly shady plot catalyst, who always seems to have an ace up her sleeve and always seems to know more than anyone else; and, the brilliant but frustrated spouse who may, or may not, be in on the crime at the narrative’s centre. However, their archetypal characteristics are dialled up to such a degree (Stephanie is the definition of innocence, Emily is the type of person that simply doesn’t exist in the real world, Sean is impossibly attractive, funny, intelligent, and kind), that they can’t help but seem caricatures. Similarly, everything is presented in such a nonchalant and laid back manner that the twists, which in a more self-serious film would occupy centre stage, are often rendered absurd. However, and this is the key point, _A Simple Favour_ is very much in on the joke. Most of the time.

Opening with a late 1960s Europop-influenced Saul Bass-esque title sequence complete with sliding split-screens and pastel colours, scored to Jean Paul Keller’s 1967 “Ca s’est arrange”, the film signals its playful tone right from the off. This emphasis on stylisation is perhaps seen most clearly upon Emily’s introduction. As Stephanie, Miles, and Nicky shelter from the rain, Emily emerges from a car in slow motion, with the camera starting on her feet before slowly moving up to her head as she raises an umbrella. Cutting to a mid-shot, she then begins to walk across the carpark (still in slow motion), as a broken umbrella blows past her, replacing the tumbleweed of a classic western shootout. Apart from being a memorable introduction to the character, the visual design of the scene is predicated on cine-literacy, showing that the filmmakers are more than aware of standard genre tropes, and, more importantly, how to employ them for comedic effect.

Indeed, the entire film revels in its own intertextual awareness, with later references to such defining noir texts as George Cukor’s _Gaslight_ (1944), Alfred Hitchcock’s _Spellbound_ (1945), and Henri-Georges Clouzet’s _Les diaboliques_ (1955). Another element of this awareness is the use of a fractured narrative structure, so beloved of classic noir mysteries. Large portions of the film feature narration within narration (and oftentimes narration within narration within narration), as well as making use of another classic noir staple; the unreliable narrator. The film gets significant mileage out of scenes where the aural narration doesn’t even come close to matching the visuals; i.e., the narrator is lying, and both the narratee and the audience are aware of such. An especially funny example of this is when Stephanie tells Emily about kissing her step-brother after their father’s funeral, and Emily immediately knows she is lying that she only kissed him (leading to her new nickname for Stephanie, “_brotherfucker_”). Whilst the narrator (Stephanie) flat-out denies she slept with him, the audience sees them having sex, confirming the narratee’s (Emily) suspicions. This technique is used several times in the film, and it’s an extremely well-handled narrative device.

The film’s main target for satire, however, is not really a specific genre (suburban noir) or even the tropes that define that genre – it’s the _milieu_ that enables the existence of that genre in the first place. Together, Stephanie, Emily, and Sean represent everything that’s rotten with the sterilised, emotionally deadening middle-class suburban sphere in which they’re (seemingly) trapped. However, the film doesn’t condemn them for being horrible people, rather it exults in their awfulness, deftly directing, redirecting, and misdirecting the audience’s sympathies, to the point where it becomes difficult to say who is screwing over whom. Every time the film seems to settle on who the villains are, it does something to disrupt the audience’s perceptions, and oftentimes, so as to achieve maximum satirical impact, precisely when the character we are now being asked to empathise with is up to something somewhat less than moral. This is the very essence of black comedy – the film presents a hideous world populated by hideous people who do hideous things to one another, but it does so in such a cheerful and uplifting manner that you simply can’t help but laugh at the shenanigans.

In relation to this, the film works especially well when jauntily charting the friendship between Stephanie and Emily, two women who have no businesses co-existing. I don’t particularly understand Anna Kendrick’s popularity. Although she seems perfectly amiable in real-life, she plays the exact same character in every film, and that character is Anna Kendrick. However, it works here because, a) it’s the perfect foil to the “screw-you” persona of Emily, and b) Kendrick and Lively have such effortless chemistry (it’s one of those films that, as you watch, you know they had a blast making). The two women are just so fundamentally different that it wouldn’t take much to make their early scenes together work, but everything is in place to amplify the comedy – the lively script, the great acting, the unintrusive direction, the brightly-lit and garish interiors, the clashing wardrobes. Lively plays Emily as a mischievous, experienced charmer, the kind of person who acts like they know your secrets ten seconds after meeting you, whilst Kendrick’s Stephanie is all self-deprecating intellectualism, trailed-off sentences, and statements phrased like questions. Frankly, I could have watched two hours of just the two of them trading good-natured barbs, pushing each other’s buttons, and swapping sex stories.

If there was one element of the film that didn’t work, however, it was the mystery plot. Yes, I get that it’s all a satire of the multi-twist-for-twist’s-sake suburban murder mystery, with the preposterousness of such plots played for maximum farcicality. However, the satirical underpinning doesn’t change the fact that the entire mystery at the film’s centre is insipid, uninteresting, and predictable, whilst Feig seems patently unable to bridge the tone of the frothier comic moments and the darker ones which become increasingly prevalent towards the end. Granted, the film is not a spoof, à la something like Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker’s _Airplane!_ (1980), so we can’t expect absurdist humour throughout, but nevertheless, rather than choosing to employ a relatively even tone, Feig seems to have made the decision to mix scenes of outright comedy with predominantly serious scenes devoid of laughter. And it doesn’t work. For example, the film features a scene in which someone who has just been ploughed by a car and is trying to crawl away is nonchalantly told if they don’t stop, they’re going to hurt their knees. That’s pretty dark, but it’s also pretty funny. However, it comes only a short while after a scene in which a drug-addict is held under the water and drowned. Not a huge amount to laugh at there. If scenes of this nature are supposed to be satiric, and hence feed into the film’s engagement with the suburban noir, I couldn’t see any evidence of it, and as a result, the tonal disparity becomes very jarring towards the end.

For all that, however, I found _A Simple Favour_ enjoyable. The purely-satirical early scenes earn enough goodwill so that the less successful more plot-heavy later scenes don’t completely tear the whole thing down. The film as a whole shines a not unwelcome light on the increasingly self-important suburban noir, and for the most part, the parody is very well-judged. When the comedy is forced to retreat in the service of more serious material, the tonal balance is definitely knocked off, as the film comes dangerously close to valorising that which it has set out to mock. Despite this, however, _A Simple Favour_ remains entertaining. Distractingly attractive people wear ridiculously stylish clothes in a stylised cine-literate parody – it won’t change your life, but it’s a very rewarding couple of hours.

It’s a bright looking setting for such a dark time in history in Munich: The Edge of war – Everything looks colourful and stylish.

Nevertheless Schwochow keeps the tension up right from the beginning. It’s a classic case of the audience knowing more than the characters. Helping with the tension is keeping the Germans speaking German.

The film has an impending doom about it. It’s Titanic meets a world war with lots of people being wrong in their assurances of the future. This is fine, they’re saying. The tension between the two leads Legat and von Hartmann reflects the tensions between the countries yet somehow in reverse. They are trying to reconcile while their countries irrevocably turn to war. The script is good enough not just to make these two characters overly simple.

McKay finds himself again being a messenger right back in the wars (after after he starred in 1917) with the world being on the verge of WWII. He just must be made of the right stuff – or at least the running stuff.
Irons thrives as the miscalculating Chamberlain PM, while the film shows him to be harshly treated by history. Everyone seems anxious as if there was a war on or something.

The theme of personal need versus national duty comes up as well as the sacrifices required come in opposite directions when some are sacrificing for the country and others are against it. The film serves as inspiration and a warning for future skirmishes.

Viewers can be glad the filmmakers resisted the temptation of calling this Hitler’s Translator. It’s an effective international thriller since the audience know the ending and its accompanying tragedy.
Full Analysis at Spotamovie.com **- Intro -** The lovers of negotiations, conspirators and historical dramas will enjoy the movie. The story focuses on the 1938 Munich Agreement. However, the director embraces the fictional way more than the historical one, and the film becomes an enjoyable drama enriched with some taste of a thriller. **- The Story -** In autumn 1938, Europe was on the brink of war. Hitler claimed back the territory of Sudetenland, belonging at that moment to Czechoslovakia. If Hitler invades the Czech, France and Britain must protect them. Prime Minister Chamberlain and his staff have less than 24 hours to find a diplomatic solution and prevent a tragic European conflict. Behind the lines, two old friends, Hugh Legat and Paul von Hartmann weave the web to keep the peace and change the course of history. The solution seems to be a quick agreement to give back to the Germans the Sudetenland. But will it be enough? Who are Hugh and Paul? And what is behind this story and the conspiracy? – **Full analysis at https://www.spotamovie.com/munich-the-edge-of-war-movie-review-and-explanation-2021-movie/**

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

titular  : The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
a lansa  : 2014-12-10
arhivare : 144 Minutes
gen : Action, Adventure, Fantasy

As there was not much more to be told from the end of the previous movie, just assist to more than 2h of continuous battle.

Quite pointless, but you may enjoy the action if that is what you were looking for …
The Lord of The Rings are still occupying the three top places of my top ten movies list. Needless to say I am a fan of Tolkien and his Middle Earth fantasy story. I never felt that The Hobbit series could match the original trilogy but then much of the story in The Hobbit is not really Tolkien’s but produced by Hollywood scriptwriters to embellish the story enough to fill three movies. It is not a bad attempt by any means (for being a Hollywood one) but it does not really reach the heights of The Lord of The Rings.

Still, I quite liked these movies. They are good adventure, fantasy, special effects movies. Thus it saddened me when I went to IMDb and the first things I saw was a bunch of people shouting crap and giving it one star reviews. That is just so much rubbish. This is the third movie and it is not vastly different from the others. If you disliked the first ones so much why go and see this one? Also, the harping about not following the book. At this point that is a nonsense argument. It was fairly obvious that it was not going to follow the book in detail when it was announced that there were going to be three movies and if you did not get it then then you should have gotten it from the other two movies. One star ratings looks more like trolling to me.

Anyway, back to the movie itself. I definitely liked this movie better than the second one. It was on par with the first one for me. There was less silly stuff, less stuff that just felt like fillers and the special effects were generally good.

The story and the implementation is, as I wrote, less filled with fillers as the last movie. At least from my point of view. Still though, the story is not at all up to the standard of the original Tolkien works. It shows that it is a Hollywood product that favors effects and quantity before depth and quality. The battle at the end was epic but at the same time somewhat nonsensical in how people ran back and forth clobbering people and beasts right left and center. I did quite like the ramming troll though.

I have to say that I did not like that weasel Alfrid. Sure he was meant to be disliked but he got tiresome rather quickly. He could have been left out after being pushed into the water as far as I am concerned. After that I just got annoyed every time he appeared and I got especially annoyed by the fact that everyone, even Gandalf, seemed to trust him to actually do what he was told. I was hoping all the way to the finishing scenes that he would meet a gruesome end.

On the whole I definitely liked this movie. It had a “Tolkienesque” athmosphere, decent acting, decent story and loads and loads of special effects. Even though it does not reach the heights of The Lord of The Rings it is definitely great entertainment for the fantasy, not to mention special effects, lovers.
Comparing the _Lord of the Rings_ trilogy and the _Hobbit_ trilogy was already like comparing apples and mediocre oranges, but none so mediocre as _Battle of the Five Armies_. Don’t get me wrong, I love a “battle” as much as the next guy, more maybe, I don’t even mind a movie that’s 95% battle, but in this? It does. Not. Work.

_Five Armies_ is a movie that never made it out of pre-viz, let alone to a polished, well-rounded, final cut. I enjoy it to some degree when running through a Middle-Earth marathon as a whole, but only when the group I’m with will let me roll my eyes and complain about it.

_Final rating:★★½ – Had a lot that appealed to me, didn’t quite work as a whole._
Exactly what it says on the tin – to a fault.

Don’t get me wrong, I like it. However, towards the end ‘The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies’ definitely begins to drag quite heavily – the impact of what eventually happens did not, to be honest, hit as strongly as it could’ve/should’ve. The pure action is good, but there’s not much to remember about everything else.

None of the characters, with the exception of Richard Armitage (Thorin) and Luke Evans (Bard) I guess, stand out amidst the wall-to-wall battle. Martin Freeman (Bilb), Ian McKellen (Gandalf) & Co. are are of little importance really, which is a shame.

‘The Hobbit’ series, unfortunately, gets inferior as it goes by. Loved the first film, enjoyed the second but this third installment – while passable – leaves me with a feeling of wanting something else from it. Happy to have watched them though, I’d still recommend them for sure.

Some cool ideas but Anderson brings a new level of visual incoherence to the action scenes that is confounding and irritating rather than thrilling. It’s as if he hasn’t watched a single action movie in the last decade.

Not to mention so many stupid jump scares I had to wonder if he was trying to get a job with Blumhouse.

Still, Milla Jovovitch retains a steely charisma that remains compelling, but deserves far better material. Hopefully with this being the ‘final’ film she will be free to go and find it.
I was scared by “previews” which said the editing was too chaotic. My experience is mixed. In the first 1/3 of the film, there is a ridiculous number of cuts in the action scenes (didn’t like it), but afterwards this wasn’t a problem. So yeah, chaotic filming at the start, but much more enjoyable/conventional for the middle and end.

(P.S. There is at least one VERY scary scene in the first 1/3… despite the chaotic cinematography!)

This film TRIED to tie up all the loose end of the franchise, but it didn’t do very well. At least we get to see Claire Redfield again… she looks hot as always, but we don’t see her much, and she doesn’t have anything to say about K-Mart or her brother, Chis Redfield!

The biggest disappointment for me was the lame death of the “big bad” … that is, Wesker. I won’t spoil his demise here, but let’s just say it was Dues Ex Machina… (for those without a Latin background, it means an ass-pull by the writers!)

I guess Wesker was too awesome to defeat in a fair fight! Anyway, the final battle of Alice was against *SPOILIER* Dr. Isaacs! Actually the final battle was against Dr. Isaacs and his clone!!

I have mixed opions about this film… it tried, and in some sense succeeded in giving a finality to the movie franchise. But it also failed in many ways. The 3D was pretty crappy compared to the last two films ( I just learned they filmed this one in 2D and then up-converted it to 3D in post-production… unlike RE 4 and RE 5 which were REALLY filmed in 3D… so yeah, the human eye [at least my eye] can spot the difference between real art and AFTER-THE-FACT-POST-PRODUCTION cinematography).

Also, they completely skipped what happened in Washington DC (the end of the previous film). There is one line in the movie which referenced this… basically “Wesker betrayed Alice and didn’t REALLY give her back full power of the T-Virus”. As a fan, I found this lame 1-liner very dissatisfying for the series finale! 😦

So now you may think I am an RE hater, but that isn’t the full truth. I felt this film was *literally* too dark, and the 3D was merely acceptable (not fantastic like prior films), but it did give a conclusion and explored upon things like clones of Alice…

I guess the only/biggest fault is the plot in the final scene… an air-borne virus, which will literally take years to work (according the movie itself!) manages to kill hundreds of thousands of zombies IN AN INSTANT… at the movie’s climax… this is too convenient/stupid to be believed by anyone… even an RE Fan like me. I’m sorry, but can you say EPIC FAIL?

== EPILOGUE ==
This film tries, and in a few cases succeeds, to tie up the Resident Evil franchise. But the fake-3D *FAILS* compared to the real-3D of the prior two films. The horror factor REALLY IS much better than the last 3 or 4 films… but is it enough???
I would say that my expectations for this movie was pretty much spot on. I expected a visual action feast with a fair amount of gore in it and that is pretty much what I got. Things like a well developed script and stuff like that, well obviously the producer thought asking for such things would be nitpicking.

It currently holds a 5.6 rating at IMDb and 60% user score on TMDb which is fairly well deserved. Of course there are always reviewers giving it single star ratings and saying it is the worst film ever. That is just bullshit. These people have obviously never seen a really bad movie.

Milla Jovovich is again playing the hot zombie killing chick from the previous movies and although she tragically lost her superior T-virus strength in one of the previous installments her capacity for dealing death and mayhem as well as absorbing hits still borders on being super hero stuff. Unrealistic but fun to watch.

Despite my comments on the script earlier there is actually one with a paper thin thread intended just to bring the story from point A to B with a maximum of violence and special effects in between. I do think the tanks that they had cooked up looked cool although they were just visual candy a’la Mad Max. I mean come one, a tank with ventilation shafts all over the place so all you had to do was pour some gazoline over it and light a match? Stupid to say the least.

There were a few other things was more designed for looks than realism. For instance a certain ventilation fan that were used to drag out some of the events. Who the f… designs a ventilation fan with a dozen or so rings of blades? It is a ventilation fan for Christ sake, not a jet engine turbine. Oh, yes of course, stupid me, otherwise they would not have to spend so much time crawling through it.

I did like the various mutated zombies as well by the way. The flying thing at the beginning and the end was quite cool. Some people seems to have had an issue with the fast, sometimes very fast, clipping of scenes. I have to say that it did not disturb me that much. Not that it added much either though.

Speaking of the end. Well, I guess it was okay. The end itself was not too surprising. It was dragged down by the stupid nonsense with Dr. Isaacs though. The only time an exploding grenade resulted in anything less than a semi-atomic eruption of flames was of course when the director had decided that he needed the bad guy for a few more scenes. Lazy and stupid script writing.

On the whole I enjoyed the movie as much as I expected to. It was an okay movie. Good for a evening fix of zombie splattering and Milla Jovovich (okay so what, I am a male of traditional sexual orientation you know). It could have been a lot better but it was not really horrendously bad either.
**Time to bring down the remaining of Umb Corp.**

The series never meant to be story based. Well, at the first it was fine, but then it turned out be more a video game style than the normal commercial films. So if you are going to watch it, your expectation from it should be the action-adventures. Of course, nothing happens without a reason, that’s where the story was born. This is the sixth film in the series and they are saying it is the final, but have to wait and see in a couple of years, whether another film will be made or they are going for television as hinted out.

The main character is long dead, that’s what they say to us every time. And then a new sequel with the same character and their explanation is, clone. That’s seems okay, but that being a regular thing is what annoying. This film is enjoyable, like I say, watching a game played by someone sitting next to us. But not the best of the series or the year, nor its kind. Just to enjoy the action sequences. All the top, knowing about Olivia Jackson made me almost to cry. She’s the real hero, hats off.

As I said, the film was not necessary if you go by the story. It was just another mission, a fight to bring down the last remaining Umbrella Corp and possibly to reveal more secrets about it and everything so far happened. I always wondered how this franchise survived this long. Yeah, every time a decent box office pushed the filmmakers and actors to go for another one. The film’s main ingredient, graphics were acceptable, and performances too. So, it is only for the selected audience, but you can ignore it if you are not that interested in it.

_4/10_
Liked it a tad better than the first time, however still a bit convoluted conclusion and the biggest knock is they completely ignored any potential left from Retribution, that being the zombie siege on the White House with our heroes (and villain) taking one last stand. Instead, Jill Valentine is killed off-screen (I guess) as was Alice’s “daughter” and instead we get a Dr. Isaac being a religious fanatic (well Dr. Isaac’s clone of course) and a band of misfit characters (including Ruby Rose before she became famous I think), plus the return of Claire (Ali Larter) after being MIA in the last film.

There were some elements that weren’t too bad, and the fight and stuntwork was alright, but as with the previous FIVE movies, nothing terribly memorable. And they leave it open-ended because, of course. Have to think any future installments will end up on whichever streaming service Sony makes a deal with… **2.5/5**

Aquaman

Good movie to watch.
***Lame-axx butt of a joke no longer***

Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) lives with his father on the Maine Coast, a caretaker of a lighthouse. With the mentorship of Vulko (Willem Dafoe) and the revelations of Mera (Amber Heard) he discovers that he is the half-breed heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. As the rightful successor to the throne, he must tangle with his brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) to save the surface world from destruction. Meanwhile Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) seeks vengeance on Arthur for the death of his father.

“Aquaman” (2018) is a colorful superhero flick featuring a flashy action scene for every 5 minute lull. It’s reminiscent of “Thor” (2011) and “Thor: The Dark World” (2013), but with spectacular undersea realms instead of Asgard & realms nearby. Yet the drama was better in those movies whereas here it feels like the creators were in a rush to jump to the next action sequence, which might make “Aquaman” ‘thrilling,’ but less compelling story-wise.

Still, it’s very eventful with loads of energy (maybe TOO eventful for its own good). And I liked the balance of underwater scenes to surface scenes with spectacular locations, including the Sahara Desert and Sicily. Meanwhile Amber is stunning as redheaded Mera. Even Nicole Kidman shows up as Arthur’s mother, Atlanna. Speaking of Arthur, Momoa is magnificent as the protagonist and will forever change the public’s generally weak perception of Aquaman.

The film is a bit overlong at 2 hour, 23 minutes; and was shot in Australia (Hastings Point, Amity Point, Southport, Main Beach & Currumbin Beach); Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada; and Morocco (Erfoud & Merzouga).

GRADE: B
I just came back home from watching Aquaman on the IMAX theater in Balexert in Geneva and thought that I should write something up while it’s still fresh in my mind. Something that happens all too rarely.

I have to say that, overall, I had quite a blast watching this movie. It is indeed a good superhero and special effects extravaganza. In addition it is quite beautiful. A lot of the underwater scenes are very pleasing on the eye indeed. I am quite happy that I managed to drag my ass over to a theater and watch it on a IMAX screen. Some of the hype around it is perhaps a bit too much though. It does not quite reach the masterpiece level after all.

Storywise, well it is a superhero movie after all so if you expect the story to be profound, logical and watertight you should lay off those mushrooms or whatever you are smoking. That said, the story was not too bad. Pretty straightforward and not too convoluted. A good, solid story suitable for a action/adventure movie.

I did quite like the main protagonists on the good side. Especially Jason Momoa as Aquaman. I mean his time-to-kick-some-ass-stare was just so…evil. The script writer had put some stupid shit in there where he had to play overly dumb at times but on the whole he was a good guy throughout the entire movie. Almost no whining, angst and anti-hero shit like what have totally ruined most of the Marvel TV-shows lately.

The bad guys were not too bad either. Orm was lacking a bit in the bad guy charisma department but Black Manta was oozing despicable bad bad bad asshole from the first scene to the last. I probably should not say this because his weird helmet is indeed true to the comics but, well, it’s weird and kind of looks better in a comics than on the big screen.

Special effects? Well, there is not that much to say really. They are pretty awesome throughout the movie and, as I wrote above, a lot of the time they are also beautiful. The various creatures, underwater vehicles and gadgets are really cool and well designed.

The one gripe I have about the movie is the totally unnecessary green preaching crap. Luckily it is confined to a couple of scenes but in those it is really slapped in the audience’s faces. A superhero movie should be entertaining, not preaching. If I want that shit I can turn on the news. It’s a star off from me just for that nonsense.
Doesn’t hold a candle to _Wonder Woman_, but tall-buildings worth of leaps (and bounds) better than everything else that’s come out of the DCIThoughtSheWasWithU. It’s weirdly kind of… The nicest? Of these movies? Which is not the kind of direction you would think a film in this series would go based on how it started, but Jason Momoa is just charismatic as **Hell**, and _Aquaman_ leans on that a lot.

By the time it’s over, _Aquaman_ really does hit just about every cliche of the genre there is, which is not exactly high praise. It’s certainly not without heart, but it is still more spectacle than substance. But unlike, say, your _Transformers 4_, a movie often levelled the same criticism, it is not trash.

_Final rating:★★★ – I liked it. Would personally recommend you give it a go._
Aquaman was soooo cool!!!
I had decided to wait for the DVD release to watch this movie all I can say is wow oh wow why did I wait this was action galore lots of laughs momoah nailed the character perfectly to a t the movie was the best of the winter no doubt i highly recommend you get a copy of this movie no doubt you’ll enjoy it I guarantee it
The story was laughable.
The plot holes were immense.
The dialogue was atrocious.
The special effects were technically competent and pretty but cartoonish and unbelievable.

Easily the worst film I’ve seen in the last year.

If it was a bit campy, then it might have succeeded in a kind of sub-Flash-Gordon fashion.
I am so conflicted.
We’re introduced to the atlanteans with Nicole Kidman in a leotard and wet hair looking out of place in a living room and eating a gold fish.
The first fight scene has so many dramatic zoom-ins with dramatic music I thought I was watching the dramatic chipmunk video.
Willem Dafoe riding a fish!
Cheesy lines like a bad 80’s action parody.
Some amazing CGI environments, others looked like they belonged in Diablo 3. Awful compositing throughout.
Unnecessary detour through the Mines of Moria.
Puzzles worthy of Lucas Arts point and click adventure games. A villain from 90s power rangers.
Amazing scary trench scene! Giant sea creature war with fireworks and laser beams!
Not good, and not bad enough to be entertaining.
_Aquaman_ delivers a fun and ambitious adventure for the DCEU, but flounders at its opportunity for true greatness.

There is so much to like about _Aquaman_, for starters the action is on another level. The DCEU has really mastered its fight choreography allowing for the directors to get wide, interesting shots of the action without having to add unnecessary cuts. There were so many fight sequences that had me thoroughly impressed with the creativity and the scope of the action. I particularly like how James Wan was able to transition across to the battlefield to show individual fights. It gave them a sense of connectedness that is sorely missing in many superhero films today.

The plot of this film had me intrigued, although it does tend to get quite weighed down by how involved the movie is. There are so many kingdoms of Atlantis involved and their relationships can get a tad confusing during the first watch. I was constantly trying to understand the relationships between all of the main members of Atlantis, but luckily, I could grasp the gist of what the story was trying to tell. I really appreciated the fantasy parallels that the directors were going for when it came to Atlantis. It gave it a grand feel on scale to a light version of Game of Thrones. The diversity of the nations was a really nice touch as well, I found it fascinating how each nation evolved independently from each other. The main criticism that I have with the story is the writing. There are so many scenarios or lines of dialogue that were incredibly awkward to watch. I think James Wan was really out of his element writing this movie compared to his cookie cutter horror films that he has built his reputation on. Hopefully he can learn from his mistakes for the sequel.

I was not overly impressed with the acting in this film either. Jason Mamoa was acceptable as Aquaman but like I said previously there were quite a bit of lines that were delivered awkwardly. I found that the comedic timing of the jokes did not really land and felt out of place in this film. The chemistry between Mamoa and Amber Heard was non-existent, I did not buy for a second that the two were truly in love and the whole build up to the relationship felt incredibly forced. Willem Dafoe was excellent as always and Patrick Wilson was fairly adequate as well. This film had an all-star cast, so it is odd to me that so many lines were delivered awkwardly, I think it is more so on the writing and direction rather than the actors’ abilities.

Even with all my complaints about the film, I still found myself having a good time. Although, I can’t help but wonder, if given a more suitable director and writer, how amazing this film could have truly been.

**Verdict:** _Decent_

**Score:** _68%_
Honestly I wasn’t expecting anything SPECTACULAR but it wasn’t bad as I thought it would be. Mamoa pulls off Arthur very well it’s the supporting cast… no, one cast member that turned my stomach to watch. AMBER HEARD. After all she did to Johnny Depp I got physically ILL watching her on screen. The rest of the movie would have been FINE if she wasn’t in it. Honestly, I wish I could just BLOCK her out. I loved William Defoe’s character… and I would have loved MORE interactions between him and other characters. I loved the visuals. Underwater is hard… so them making it so SEAMLESS, was awesome.

Big Hero 6

subtitlu : Big Hero 6

One of the best animated movies that I have seen so far. Fun story, cool characters and a lot of emotions. Hands down to Disney and Marvel for creating this masterpiece of a movie.
Heartwarming and funny! Watching a connection between humans and a robot who can actually coexist triggered my imaginative side and taught me the value of genuine friendship. True friendship might come hard but this movie showed me a bond through thick and thin.
I will say this, Big Hero 6 is definitely worth watching! If you love Disney and Marvel, then this film is definitely for you. The tandem between the main character and robot is phenomenal and the bond between them made the core of this movie.
This movie appeals to all ages! It didn’t feel forced for me and it entertained me through and through. The Disney magic still lives on!
BAYMAX!!! I would pay a lot of bucks just to hug that adorable and lovable robot! This film is not just a kiddie movie, but has an emotional take that os perfect for both kids and adults alike!
Honestly, I never thought I would see the day a movie made by Disney based on Marvel Comics will happen. And I’m glad they did! It is a fantastic film for everyone, and Baymax is one of the most entertaining characters that I saw.
Simply amazing! The relationship between Hiro, the main character, and Baymax, the robotic nurse his brother left him, was special and entertaining. A great film, one of the best.
The movie has a way that teaches you life lessons even though it was an animated movie. A lot of human emotions were involved in this one, and I gotta admit, I maybe cried a little.
Honestly, I just got forced watching this movie by my child, and I’m glad I did. This movie appeals to all ages. It combines this one amazing animation, writing and a set of characters that are full of personalities that will make you love them a lot!
Big Hero 6, a film where I can say, that went to my list of most loved animated films! The way it tugs at the hearts of everyone, and not just targeted to the kids, made it pretty awesome. And honestly, we just loved the movie because of Baymax, come on!
Tadashi was a brother I never had. He’s been a very important character in this movie, and it was so smart of him to build Baymax.
This movie taught me the essence of confidence and perseverance. If you put your heart and mind into something, things are possible.
ADORABLE! How could a giant white robot with an expressionless face make someone feel better? Sometimes, presence is all that matters.
Smartness overload! The technology and talents of all the characters were beyond my comprehension. GENIUS!
Cool animated superhero film, one that I think is good.

There are moments I like about ‘Big Hero 6’ and moments I don’t like quite as much. I’ll start with the positive parts. The animation is excellent, as is the music (nice song from Fall Out Boy). It also has a fair amount of heart, not as much as the film intends to add but still more than most.

Now for the lesser things; that aren’t bad per se, just not as well done in my opinion. The plot doesn’t feel like anything too refreshing, I feel it’s a story I’ve mostly seen elsewhere; in a few areas it kinda reminded me of the sorta stuff you’d see in a Scooby Doo episode, at least in terms of the twists and/or antagonists. I, also, don’t love the design for Baymax – making a character with no facial expressions or true emotion always makes it harder to get attached to them. I do like his purpose, mind.

As for the cast, they’re decent just not memorable to me. Ryan Potter and Daniel Henney are solid as Hiro and Tadashi, I enjoy their bond together. I’m struggling to remember any of the others though.

All in all, a good film – it’s just missing a couple of things that would’ve made it greater.

If you enjoy reading my Spoiler-Free reviews, please follow my blog @
https://www.msbreviews.com

As I wrote in countless other reviews of the same genre, I mostly enjoy movies “based on a true story” since these almost always accomplish my main expectations: to be enlightened on an event or subject matter I didn’t know (much) about. The real-life story of Mohamedou Ould Slahi was obviously unknown to me at the time of this viewing, but The Mauritanian does a great job in telling his shocking, insane, unbelievable life at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. The existence of this outside-the-law prison still baffles me to this day. Two decades into the XXI century and humanity still finds a way of immorally and illegally destroying the most basic of human rights.

Kevin Macdonald, a director who’s probably more recognized for his documentaries than his feature films, offers a straightforward adaptation of the protagonist’s memoir, focusing on the main narrative without letting too much of the typical Hollywood melodrama get its generic, diminishing share. It follows the usual formula when it comes to this type of movie, and its technical attributes aren’t distractingly flashy or overwhelming, which might be the best compliment I have to give The Mauritanian. Its story alone is interesting enough, so I deeply appreciate that Macdonald used his doc-experience to produce this film since it could have easily been a regular documentary – and in some ways, it’s very similar to one.

The screenplay written by M.B. Traven, Rory Haines, and Sohrab Noshirvani is quite captivating throughout most of the runtime, but it does lose a bit of steam due to some unnecessary, unimpactful sequences. During many moments, the writers and Macdonald make their point come across efficiently, but these scenes keep going for a few extra minutes that don’t really add anything new to the story, the characters, or the atmosphere. Despite the main narrative being about Slahi, these subplots involving secondary characters are far from being remotely interesting. If not for an always captivating Benedict Cumberbatch and a charming Shailene Woodley, some of these storylines could have hurt the movie a lot more.

One of the most important moments of the film occurs at the beginning of the third act. While it’s vital for the audience to experience the same horrors that Slahi did, this overlong sequence goes from purely shocking to genuinely uncomfortable to the point of some viewers actually skipping the whole thing. It falls into the issue above of not knowing when to end a scene, extending it too much, consequently increasing the already substantial runtime. Nevertheless, I remained wholly concentrated on the central story, which is partially due to the outstanding performances from Jodie Foster and especially Tahar Rahim.

The former delivers a truly remarkable display by interpreting Nancy Hollander, a lawyer who raises the most common moral dilemma in the respective area of profession. Does everyone – literally everyone – deserve the same human rights? Or are there exceptions, such as terrorists or rapists? Foster beautifully incorporates that challenging task of defending someone who 99.9% of the world would refuse to even talk to, let alone risk their life and reputation to defend him. However, in the end, it’s Rahim’s award-worthy, emotionally powerful physical performance that steals the spotlight. From his look of desperation to his never-ending hope that justice would be made, it’s impossible not to feel for Slahi and root for his freedom.

The Mauritanian is one of those “based on true events” movies that will remain in my memory for quite some time. The must-watch, shocking, real-life story of Mohamedou Ould Slahi, who received unbelievably unfair, immoral, and illegal treatment by the U.S. government, is told through a formulaic yet efficient screenplay, placing the spotlight on Tahar Rahim’s exceptional, award-worthy performance. Kevin Macdonald employs non-distracting storytelling and filmmaking methods, allowing the main focus to be on Slahi himself instead of flashy visuals or weird camera work. Despite being mostly successful in this attempt, it still loses some of its energy and overall interest by overextending irrelevant scenes featuring secondary characters. Jodie Foster also delivers an incredibly captivating interpretation of a lawyer who never gives up on her own principles and morals. It might follow the generic structure of other films in the genre, but it accomplishes its mission of bringing this story into the world without any restraints. I recommend it but beware of a violent and long torture sequence that could bother some of the more sensitive viewers.

Rating: B-
Based on the New York Times best-selling memoir “Guantánamo Diary” by Mohamedou Ould Slahi, “The Mauritanian” tells the true story of a man who spent 14 years of his life imprisoned without charges at the notorious United States military detention facility. The film is a standard legal drama that focuses more on the man and his case rather than the atrocities that were levied against him. It still reinforces what most of us already know: Gitmo was a terrible, terrible place.

Detained on the suspicion that he was connected to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Slahi (Tahar Rahim) was held by the U.S. government for over a decade. Wanting a challenge, social justice attorney Nancy Hollander (Jodie Foster) and her associate Teri Duncan (Shailene Woodley) asked for the chance to serve as defense lawyers for the man. The two advocates were shocked to learn that the only “evidence” the United States could produce was as forced confession that was coerced after months of torture to the inmate. Even the military prosecutor Lt. Colonel Stuart Couch (Benedict Cumberbatch) resigned himself from the case.

You could dismiss this as just another Gitmo movie, and you wouldn’t be wrong. It fades into the background of other similarly-themed big screen dramas, but the limited focus on one man works in the film’s favor. Foster and Rahim give effective performances, and the talent of the cast gives the film an edge. The majority of the story is about the legal team’s efforts to free Slahi from the prison, but watching characters sort through boxes of redacted material isn’t the most entertaining.

Director Kevin Macdonald touches on the emotional toll that comes from representing an accused terrorist, and Cumberbatch has his stand-up-and-applaud moment when he resigns from the case because it’s the right thing to do. But much of this content is overshadowed by the re-enactments of abuse Slahi faced, including beatings, gang rape, isolation, sleep deprivation, water boarding, and spending many nights shackled naked to the floor. This film will make you angry and sad, especially when you consider that Slahi was one of the few individuals held in Guantanamo whom U.S. officials actually acknowledge had been tortured.

“The Mauritanian” probably won’t stand the test of time as a historical document, but it is a film that will intrigue those interested in Gitmo and our government’s policies after 9/11.
Emotionally powerful thanks to the great actors (especially Rahim) and with a gripping true story, ‘The Mauritanian’ exceeds expectations, even if the overall film could have been a bit more polished.

9/10
Tahar Rahim and Kevin MacDonald have come some way since their first collaboration on “the Eagle” (2011). This one sees the former – Mohammed Ould Slahi – incarcerated, without charge, by the American authorities in Guantánamo Bay. His case comes to the attention of attorney Nancy Hollander (Jodie Foster) and together with her colleague Teri Duncan (Shailene Woodley) they fight tooth and nail to secure his release. Benedict Cumberbatch is their opponent, the formidable and honourable Col. Crouch, and as the story unfolds both parties begin to appreciate the extent of the atrocities being carried out. Rahim is super. His portrayal demonstrating startlingly well the extremes of human endurance – of body and spirit – as Hollander works tirelessly to secure his release. There have been a spate, of late, of these style of films that point the finger squarely as successive US administrations who use the rule of law as/when and if it suited them – regardless of their red or blue politics – and this poignantly delivered documentary-style film uses dialogue potently (and sparingly) as well as flashback and actuality-effect photography to gradually (OK, maybe a bit too gradually) depict the backstory of this young man – whom, so far as we know is guilty of nothing at all – really sensitively and powerfully. This is not a film that sees much actually happen in any traditional sense, and if you have read any of his best selling “Guantánamo Diaries” then you will know just how this legally protracted story concludes, but as an assessment of a state’s attempts to systematically dehumanise a man; and of the blind obedience of some of it’s servants in-so-doing, it is a compelling film to watch that cannot fail to leave a nasty taste in your mouth.
