One of the best things I can say about the “Tom and Jerry” feature movie, now streaming on HBO Max, is that it isn’t wholly terrible. The animation is bright, the human cast delivers enjoyably goofy performances, and the film stays true to the original cartoon’s roots. It isn’t super funny nor creative, but the fun story about a celebrity wedding gone awry and a stuffy New York City hotel that employs a cat to rid them of a mouse problem lays the groundwork for a bit of amusing mayhem.

Blending classic animation with live action, the effects are better than expected. The actors (including Chloë Grace Moretz, Michael Peña, Pallavi Sharda, and Colin Jost) do a great job interacting with their cat and mouse counterparts, and the cartoonish elements are reminiscent of the classic Tom and Jerry of the past. The story rekindles the rivalry between the two, but is updated for modern audiences.

The physical comedy and sight gags are good for most of the giggles, but that’s where the humor stops. There’s also a lot of unnecessary potty humor and a few questionable plot points (the movie does little to rise above certain stereotypes) that may feel cringe-worthy to some adults.

“Tom and Jerry” isn’t noteworthy at all, but it’s not awful, either. There’s enough here to entertain most kids for a couple of hours.
The spirit of the old cartoons is nowhere to be seen here, and that’s the biggest disappointment. There is certainly enough here to entertain families – albeit probably not the parents – and I can envision this film playing on repeat for certain kids. Alas, for anyone looking to recapture the magic of the cartoons and revisiting some old favourites, it’s best to look elsewhere.

Focus

“Focus” blends two different movies in roughly equal measure. One is a movie about con men, scam artists and hustlers, in the tradition of “The Sting,” “Ocean’s Eleven,” “House of Games” and “Shade.” The second movie is a romantic comedy between two people who are strongly attracted to one another, but who cannot and do not trust each other.

The movie about con men is brilliant. The hustles and scams are clever and cleverly executed with excellent skill and tradecraft. Dramatically, the double-blinds and double- crosses are well executed. The players con their marks, one another and the audience with finesse and aplomb. The cinematography, choreography and editing are crisp. The reveals are plausible within the film’s cosmos of reality.

The romantic comedy is not bad. One can understand and believe the attraction between the two characters. Will Smith’s character is hunky, clever, confident, successful and wealthy. Margot Robbie’s character is gorgeous, sexy, vulnerable, clever and charming. But the major plot points in this boy finds girl, boy loses girl, boy wins girl back subplot seem contrived, while the intriguing aspect of their relationship (How can two con artists with a history of deceiving one another learn to trust one another?) isn’t explored in a satisfactory manner. Instead we get a breakup for reasons that are never explained, a repeated gag involving a wallet, and a massive coincidence that leads the audience to believe one of them has a hidden agenda involving the other. The relationship between them works best when they are conning one another, but it needs resolution.

Technically, the film is beautifully done. Cinematography, locations, wardrobe, make-up, editing, audio — everything is polished. It’s a movie that merits a second or third viewing, not only to see the cons played out, but also to appreciate some of the subtle foreshadowing.
> Kicked off well, kept the momentum, but the end was…

It’s a Will Smith’s movie, anyway, I was going to watch it, but when the initial cast dropped out, followed by a couple more, simply intrigued me. Actually, I enjoyed the film, but did not like it because of the bad ending. It was a good twist, except the shooting thing. An example how a tiny part can decide the entire movie’s fate.

Well written crime-drama, with a touch of romance. After all the obstacles, the final cast were at their best. Heist movies always excite me because of the involvement of the tricks and thrills. Nicky, a con artist who recruits a small time thief, Jess to work with his gang. When the job and the romance advancing smoothly, an unexpected split happens. So the years passed, when they meet again, what comes is the crux of the remaining story.

The first half let us know what kind of character the Nicky is. His overwhelmed dedication for his undertaking and his reliable team’s the focus. Overall, it was the best portion of the movie, and the next half goes for the giant kill, but lacks enthusiasm. More like a revenge or jealousy type narration, but only until reaching the climax where it tries being a very clever and happen all the things at a brisk pace.

The film was better than I thought, after learning it was criticised, mostly very badly. Would have been a bit better if the writing was cautious for the crucial parts. Importantly, like I said the end part. ‘Yes’ for the entertainment it provided and ‘no’ for one of the best products of the year,

6½/10

Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins 2021 Online Subtitrat in Romana

Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins

titulatură  : Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins

gen : Action, Adventure

The latest film in the G.I. Joe cinematic universe has arrived with “Snake Eyes: GI Joe Origins”. The film was originally planned to arrive in March of 2020 but faced delays due to cinematic closures during the Pandemic.

The film opens with a young boy being orphaned after a group of thugs kills his father. Years later the man is still obsessed with finding out who killed his father and earns a living in underground fighting known as Snake Eyes (Henry Golding)

His exploits get the attention of Kenta (Takehiro Hira); who hires him into his organization with a promise to help him find the man who killed his father.

Snake Eyes soon finds himself working on the docks where he smuggles guns into fish bound for Japan. Despite his misgivings working for criminals, he befriends a man named Tommy (Andrew Koji); who teases him about his demeaning work by calling him “Fish Boy”.

When Kenta forces Snake Eyes to kill Tommy for being a spy; Snake Eyes refuses and the two make a daring escape to Japan. It is learned that Tommy is next in line to run his clan and that Kenta was banished years prior and plans revenge.

Despite mistrust from a trusted associate named Akiko (Hakura Abe); Snake Eyes begins his training in the Ninja Arts which should he survive will make him a valued part of the Clan which Tommy believes is correct thanks to his Blood Debt to Snake Eyes.

The film focuses on various aspects of training before branching into the larger story of divided loyalties and honors which results in a few battles and chases along the way.

While the film does space the action out; it does provide some great cinematography and the action is entertaining even if it lacks much tension.

The biggest issue is that the G.I. Joe/COBRA connection seems a bit forced as The Baroness (Ursula Corbero) arrives to move things along but it is mainly for the purpose of getting characters to do this and get that so the film can move towards the climactic action.

Samara Weaving does show up as Scarlett but she does not have a very large part in the story and aside from a few limited action moments; she seems to be more of the token G.I.Joe representation.

Golding and Hira are very good and their intertwined and complicated relationship is giving plenty of time to develop as their past is a large part of their futures and the film does a good job in explaining their past and future motivations.

The film blends Asian and Western film styles and in doing so creates an enjoyable film that for me was more enjoyable than the prior films in the series. To me those films focused mainly on action and this one was focused on developing characters.

While it remains to be seen what direction future films in the franchise will take; it would be interesting to see more of Snake Eyes story down the line.

3 stars out of 5
If you are looking for the G.I. Joe style storytelling and action this may disappoint. It’s a very different style and kind of predictable in many ways.
Bland and forgettable martial-arts thriller that delves deeper into the character but outside of Henry Goulding who was good in the role, there’s not much else to the film. The rest of the cast wasn’t terribly charismatic and Samara Weaving talents is completely wasted in a small supporting role (shows up basically for the third act). I don’t know, while the first two GI Joe films weren’t very good, there were a few entertaining moments, this one I found pretty boring for the most part, worse yet, the fight scenes suffered from bad editing and poor lighting. **2.5/5**
I actually liked the two first G.I. Joe movies, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and G.I. Joe: Retaliation. This one… not so much.

It could have been a really good movie but it ended up as a huge disappointment. The story should have been a cool revenge story but it ended up being a convoluted mess making Snake Eyes one of the bad guys for most of the movie. It is also hugely predictable after the first 20 minutes of the movie. Did the writers really think that the “twists” would come as a surprise for anyone? They probably did since Hollywod writers usually reside on the low end of the intelligence scale nowadays. Putting three of those hacks together to write a movie doesn’t help of course.

I could have accepted all of that if the rest would have been cool with lots of fights and special effects. Sadly the movie is mediocre, at best, in these areas as well.

Snake Eyes is not only a bad guy but he is rather stupid as well as devoid of any charisma. His acting is quite poor which can be said for most of the actors actually. Apart from the mediocre acting there’s really no one in the movie that you feel like rooting for. No one stands out, everyone just excels in mediocrity. The only person in the entire movie that has any coolness factor worth talking about is Scarlett but she is not in the movie for more than a few scenes.

There are a few scenes with some special effects, cars flipping over, huge snakes etc. but not really that much for this kind of movie. That could have been fine since this movie should be a lot about martial arts. Amazingly enough, not even here does it deliver. Most of the martial arts scenes involve a lot of flipping around with arms and swords but they mostly look like they have been written for a PG rated TV show for teens and pre-teens. They are simply poor. Tommy looks like he needs to take a dump before every fight with that ridiculous pose of his.

This is not a 1-star movie as some rate it. That’s just ridiculous. It has some entertainment value. However, it could have been so much better. Unfortunately I suspect this movie has done the G.I. Joe franchise a disservice for some time to come.
It’s one thing offering us Henry Golding as a pretty chap you’d want to take home to meet your mother, it’s quite another telling him to abstain from shaving for a few days and hope that turns him into a convincing, highly trained ninja! That’s what is in store for us here as this latest GI Joe spin off presents our hero as the rescuer of the heir of an ancient Japanese clan – “Tommy” (Andrew Koji). Once he is thoroughly ingratiated with this noble family, it transpires that old “Snake Eyes” has an agenda all of his own – and it’s not exactly honourable! The rest of the film follows a well trodden path of suspicion, betrayal, reconciliation and – of course – loads of epic looking sword fighting and gravity-defying action scenes. As with so many films in this genre, way too much emphasis has been placed on the look of the thing – the characters are instantly forgettable, the plot thinner than any rice paper could ever hope to be and the ending dragged this, quite unnecessarily, over the two hour mark. It needs a big screen to do the photography and visuals justice, but maybe just pay daytime rates?

I found this to be an incredibly fun and beautifully shot film. Who cares if it’s John Wick-esque? It’s not like he invented the genre. Mary Elizabeth Winsted was freakin’ awesome and I totally wanted to be her. The colors, the lights, the fight scenes? Excellent. Sometimes a movie is just supposed to be entertaining…it doesn’t have to change the course of cinema history to be good. I mean, people give this 2-stars and then rave over Malignant? Take that with a grain of salt. On second thought, just take the shaker.
The keywords already tell you the story outline, so I skip that.

Most of this movie is fan service – a lot of (female) Max Payne (the real one, not the awkward 2008 dud); of Agent 47, a bit of John Wick, a nod to Leon (“all of them”)… not too a complicated story, well-choreographed and filmed violence, nice modern Japanese atmosphere:
I got what I expected, a satisfying action flick. And that’s probably what Netflix ordered for us, “Because You Watched”.

But what made it really worth seeing this movie for me were a couple of minutes of actual acting.
Winstead is great at her Terminator/MaxPayne/Leon/Wick/McClane-Show, and when she’s allowed to act, she proves worth being the lead.
But when Jun Kunimura turns up, he expresses so much in a little time, that was what really sold this movie to me.
(Also, solid supporting performances. Kudos.)

Overall: not as bad as critics say. Stylish Entertainment.
Action films with long, uncut, well-choreographed fighting sequences starring a couple of well-known actors seem to be one of the newest Hollywood trends. Kate is yet another entry in the exponentially growing list of action flicks boasting extraordinary stunt work but lacking compelling character work and an original story.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Birds of Prey) proves her worth in the combat department, carrying the otherwise dull movie on her shoulders. Unfortunately, the remarkable actress isn’t strong enough to elevate what’s just another female assassin derivative narrative that viewers have witnessed countless times before.

The Babadook 2014 Online Subtitrat in Romana

The Babadook

titular  : The Babadook
a lăsa  : 2014-05-22
arhivare : 94 Minutes
gen muzical : Drama, Horror

Ba Ba-Ba Dook! Dook! Dook!

The Babadook is written and directed by Jennifer Kent. It stars Essie Davis, Noah Wiseman, Daniel Henshall and Hayley McElhinney. Music is by Jed Kurzel and cinematography by Radek Ladczuk.

Amelia is a single mother still haunted by the violent death of her husband, she is trying to deal with her young son Samuel’s fear of a monster in the house. Initially tolerating it as a flight of fancy, the arrival of a book in the youngster’s bedroom called Mr. Babadook, signals the start of a sinister presence that she herself can begin to fear as well.

Australia has been producing some great horror films in the last couple of decades, The Babadook is one of the best of the bunch. Jennifer Kent made it as a 10 minute short back in 2005 called Monster, itself a super piece of horror film making, now in full feature length form (Kent’s first), the vision and intelligence explodes off the screen in every frame.

The premise at the core is not exactly fresh, but Kent manages to make The Babadook its own entity, skilfully steering away from formula jolts and terrors. Which in this day and age of horror retreads, sequel frenzies and blood for blood’s sake, is most refreshing. This is a big character piece, a two hander of incredible emotional power, a mother and son dealing with their own demons before the eponymous Babadook enters the fray. We care about this pair of troubled souls, so much so that as we start to feel the dread, get the tingles down the spine, our hearts are also aching for them. The two performances of the actors quite simply magnificent.

Mr. Babadook is a pop-up picture book that suddenly arrives into their lives. The creature is a sort of cross between a German expressionistic nightmare and Jack the Ripper. The book itself is creepy enough in its own right, more so as it starts to take on a more terrifying tone – and Amelia proves unsuccessful at getting rid of the thing – the picture starts playing its ace psychological cards. The monster is kept mostly to the edges of the frames, or just popping up for a quick glance in unexpected places, this is a great move and suits the narrative perfectly.

The tech credits are top notch. A key aspect to getting the most out of The Babadook is to make sure the sound is loud, for the sound mix is tremendous and can bring pounds of gooseflesh rising up on your arms. Ladczuk’s photography is at one with the themes pulsing away in the story, the colours paled and cheerless, enhancing the fractured psyches of mother and son, but Mr. Babadook is a jet black presence in this landscape. All told the art design from the book to the house and the creature is excellent.

Umbrella’s Australian All Region Blu-ray Release has a super transfer and does justice to the sound mix. There’s over an hour of interviews, which are a mixed bag of informative chat and back slapping, a 12 minute behind the scenes making of and some trailers. The bonus is the 10 minute short, Monster, The Babadook in its infancy but no less scary for it.

The Babadook is a superlative horror film for adults, like when Polanski met Kubrick and they decided to pay homage to Fritz Lang and George Melies. Yes it’s that good. 10/10
The best pure-horror of the year. But that’s not saying much.

Final rating:★★★ – I liked it. Would personally recommend you give it a go.
‘The Babadook’ is a well done horror film, one that is most definitely creepy.

I would’ve liked more from the monster and how it works, though the film does give you enough and certainly does a fine job at building up the atmosphere of uneasiness that the thing produces. One great part I noticed is the sound editing, which is astutely crafted throughout.

Essie Davis does terrific in the role of Amelia, she shows every emotion that her character is feeling nicely – I felt her pain initially with the kid, too. Noah Wiseman plays her son, Samuel. He is actually quite impressive given his age, there are a few scenes where he adds a fair deal to them.

It’s hearty, suspenseful and attempts proper horror as opposed to forcing things like jump scares, which I will always praise a production in this genre for. I wanted a little more, but overall I like this.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer 2017 Online Subtitrat in Romana

The Killing of a Sacred Deer Online Subtitrat in Romana – [1080p]

The Killing of a Sacred Deer

cap : The Killing of a Sacred Deer
declanşator : 2017-10-20
arhivare : 121 Minutes
gen : Drama, Thriller, Mystery

My immediate response as soon as this finished was “MASTERPIECE.” Lanthimos is back to _Dogtooth_-level craziness with this film and I couldn’t be happier. _The Lobster_ was a favourite of mine in 2016, but something about this one’s hopelessness drew me in more – odd, I know. Lanthimos’ films have characters stuck in dead end situations where they are able to make a choice, but the results of the options are bad and worse. It’s a dour story and the film is relentlessly unsettling, but this is what I’ve come to expect and want out of this Greek maestro.

Sacred Deer is a suburban Greek tragedy that draws inspiration from Euripides’ _Iphigenia in Aulis_ – a character even mentions this title in a key scene – and it plays out both as you’d imagine and with great shock and originality. Lanthimos and his writing partner Efthymis Filippou may just be my favourite writing team working today – they haven’t let me down yet.

The cast is spectacular here with Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell in top form bringing the odd words of Lanthimos and Filippou to life – albeit a very, very strange life. Farrell, having worked with Lanthimos on The Lobster, had nothing but high praise for the director during tonight’s Q&A after the screening of the film. He even said they were planning another project to work on together. He’s slowly becoming a muse and their relationship is turning into a DiCaprio-Scorsese type partnership (except I look forward to these way, way more).

The audience I was in had a hard time with this film – there was audible shock and disgust during the film and the applause as it ended was slight. I think people were genuinely scandalized by this one and that makes me like it even more. Keep shocking audiences, Lanthimos, you Greek bastard. I’ll be in line every single time!
I am a big fan of some of Yorgos Lanthimos’ earlier work, so _The Killing of a Sacred Deer_, which I had been told in no uncertain terms would be a straight up horror movie, was well and truly on the agenda for 2017. Unfortunately, I found that not only was _Sacred Deer_ not at all a horror, but more importantly that it lacked the dark whimsy of something truly odd, like the director’s previous film, _Lobster_. Instead it opts for an outright uncomfortable tone. The world is real, boringly so, and it is only the characters who seem unbelievable. Which is a 180 on the sort of absurdism I usually gravitate towards. That said, _Sacred Deer_ still contains some beautiful cinematography, and a couple of the most genuine laugh-out-loud moments I’ve seen in a movie all year.

_Final rating:★★½ – Had a lot that appealed to me, didn’t quite work as a whole._
Finally got the chance to see this via Amazon.

Dogtooth and The Lobster (from the same Greek director, who I must admit has a keen sense of storytelling) did not impress me at all. Very interesting ideas; atrocious presentations. Dogtooth was indecipherable and The Lobster is cruel, ugly, and not humorous in any fashion (I’ve no idea why it’s billed as a black comedy.)

However, this latest film is entertaining to me despite it’s grim and inky-black nature (based on the ancient Greek play, which is where the title is loosely derived from.) Perhaps it’s a bit more straight-forward despite its cryptic nature, a bit more involved in some form of reality we can recognize and less inference as to what the hey is really happening. But I sure watched it w/ more interest than The Lobster (I’ve no interest in the director’s film prior to that one.)

A successful heart surgeon (w/ a past history of alcoholism, sober for some time at present) is shown to have an uneasy alliance w/ the teenaged son of a patient who died on the operating table. It’s clear the boy has some hold over this surgeon, who seems eager to please him but his heart’s not into it (no pun intended.)

The boy’s true intentions are revealed as events move forward; the surgeon’s wife and two children (a few years apart, both intelligent in their own ways) are placed in grave danger as well as dear old Dad, and to reveal just how would spoil it for first-time viewers.

The camera-work here is impeccable, as are the jarring soundscapes, found-sounds, and industrial noise which makes for harrowing listening. The actor playing Martin, the teenaged oddball w/ a shared secret, is riveting to watch in a well-suited role.

Sacred Deer isn’t so much a horror-film as a drama w/ strong elements of dream-like reality, awkward young romance, and assorted chills and cold calculated sex-scenes involving “playing dead” and “the other.”

My biggest complaints would be as before w/ this director’s work: everyone speaks their lines as if hearing them through an ear-piece to parrot back, which makes the cast seem rather stilted and robotic. This director favors a weird tangent of “Mamet-speak.”

The ending is about what you’d expect, following the matter-of-fact discussions which precede it. Up until that point Sacred Deer does a pretty good job keeping us wondering what will happen next, where will things lead, what is that kid’s gift and whereupon was it bestowed; unfortunately the outcome isn’t as entrancing or unexpected as I’d hoped.

But overall worth my time to watch. Considering how disappointed I was by the previous films by the director I’d watched (great reviews, all of which confounded and puzzled me) this film was much less of a bore and a chore to watch. A pleasant, unpleasant surprise indeed.
**What a shame this could have been excellent**

This film depicts the life of upper class people as we like to imagine it, and brilliantly so. The medical doctors couple have it all figured out, speak in complete sentences and are firm and polite. The house is gorgeous, the children are smart and well behaved. The setting of the story as a whole is very well done, believable and with great actors to boot.

The score is not so great. At times we have experimental “music” that just annoys and does nothing for the mood, but the visuals are exciting to watch, we have interesting camera angles, no shaking and clever zooms and motion.

The pace is slow, yet “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” is never boring. There is always a plot twist which is explored after, things take their time but rightfully so.

Why the relatively detailed review for a 1.5 star rating? The problem is that the climax is just a huge letdown. The audience can’t help themselves but wonder what is going on, guessing on the crime the apparently genius 16 year old villain commits. It is never explained. The makers thought it would be enough to have the bad guy win. It is not enough.

In the end everything good about the movie was negated by breaking the suspension of disbelief in a petty way, just ending the movie.

Even “The Leftovers” explained its phenomenon, and that show did not need to. There the mystery was the premise for character development, here the mystery is a tool to keep the viewer’s attention.

I’d like to give less than 1.5 stars, because of how cheated I feel and because of the waste of talent and production value. But I’m sure there are people who love this and people who will learn from this.

I am migrating my reviews from a different site which has become simply garbage. TMDB looks awesome and I look forward to be a part of it.

There is no excuse for basing a screenplay on taking seriously a well known urban myth and writing it as if the audience believes the myth.

Did no one up the entire production line step out and call bullshit on the discredited ‘we only use 10% of our brain,’ idea? I am so embarrassed by seeing actors I admire, Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman, deliver solid performances on the basis of an idea at which most people laugh.
I’ve also struggled to appreciate several o Luc Besson’s movies but this is is by far the worst one.

A lot of jibber-jabber bullshit with sexy Scarlett Johansson, lots of FX, predictable ending in Paris and a pointless car race on its streets.

Better spend your time on something else …
Ignorance brings chaos, not knowledge.

Lucy is one of those films that brings about furious reactions, it is after all a science fiction type action thriller. They always divide film fans right from the off. It’s a film that to all intents and purposes needs to be viewed just as a cinematic experience, as a piece of popcorn fodder that may try to be something more cerebral, but ultimately is a daft – but hugely fun – piece of film.

Luc Besson writes and directs a film that sees Scarlett Johansson duped into being a drug mule, with the transportation of drugs sewn into her abdomen. It’s a new drug, boy is it a new drug, and when things go belly up and the drugs are unleashed into Scarlett’s system, she’s a threat – or hope – to mankind.

It can be, and has been, called pretentious et al, such is the science factor, which is perfectly understandable, so any hope of tight science fiction musings will only end up in a crushing disappointment. Undeniably Besson and his backers thought they had something to say, to open up the film watchers’ minds to something deep and probable, to be relevant and viable. But unlike the makers we the viewers didn’t have access to donepezil, so we sadly couldn’t all turn into Bradley Cooper and be limitless in our viewing capabilities.

Personally, it’s a rollicking fun film for two thirds, when it’s about Scarlett kicking butt, a revenge driven babe, it grips and shakes all the genre compliant cinematic senses. The ending, the grand finale, infuriated me, and by the looks of Morgan Freeman (coasting for easy money), he was also a little frustrated. But I had fun, yet on the flip side if anyone fronted me up and said they hated the film with a passion? Then I would understand and take them home to play with my chemistry set. 7/10
A lot of people appears to have gotten into some hate-mode when watching this movie. I guess they did not check up what the movie was really about before watching it. The movie is not perfect, it has its flaws, but a 1 or 2 star bullshit rating is hugely unfair. Personally, I really liked this movie. It is science fiction, pure and simple. If you expect science without the fiction, well then you should go and see some other movie. With Luc Besson both writing and directing and statements like “merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic” in the blurb … well I got pretty much what I expected.

The movie starts off making you think it is a “simple” revenge story with science fiction elements in the form of the superhuman Lucy. However it gradually evolves into something else. Lucy knows that she cannot survive in her new state and it becomes a quest to preserve the knowledge that she has acquired while she still has the time and at the same time dodging the drug dealers that are the cause of her situation in the first place.

Lucy is great. Her powers and how they develop are awesome. I really like surprise effects in movies and books of the kind that you get when someone like Lucy reveals her powers to the “mundane”. Especially when the revealing means swatting a few bad guys. This movie is full of moments like that. It is quite a roller coaster ride of action with Lucy exhibiting her growing powers. Not too surprisingly the movie is also full of scientific bullshit and plot holes. I do not really care. I’m in for the ride and it is a fun ride.

Scarlett Johansson is very good in her role as Lucy. Most of the other actors are ok although the Asian drug boss could have been better. He came out more like a brainless thug than anything else. Certainly not as the mastermind of a criminal organization.

The ending was a bit unsatisfactory compared to the rest of the movie though. I was a bit disappointed that the big fight at the end more or less was done without Lucy. The long cinematic sequences where Lucy wondered about in time and space felt a bit like yawn-filler-material. The actual ending, well that “I am everywhere” bit was really been there, seen that, done that. Also, if she was indeed everywhere, why the hurry to create that fancy memory stick?

Anyway, apart from that I really enjoyed this movie.
_**Time to GROW UP**_

“Lucy” (2014) is about an average hot babe named Lucy, played by Scarlett Johansson, who increasingly taps into her mind’s full capacity and, consequently, acquires superhuman powers (or are they just fully-human powers?). She hooks up with the leading expert on the human mind (Morgan Freeman) to share her discoveries and also teams-up with a Paris police captain (Amr Waked) to destroy the malevolent schemes of an arrogant Asian mob boss (Min-sik Choi).

It should be emphasized that this is not comic book superhero movie (Don’t we have enough of those yet?), it’s an ordinary-person-reaching-full-human-potential movie. There were two of these in the mid-90s, “Powder” (1995) and “Phenomenon” (1996). They’re both good, but the latter played it too safe, particularly at the end, while “Powder” reached for greatness and got a finger in. Francis Ford Coppola added his take on the genre with 2007’s “Youth Without Youth,” a dense film with many interesting elements; too bad he forgot to include an entertaining story.

“Lucy” is the best of these and is, in fact, one of my all-time favorite movies. “Lucy” includes the mindfood of Coppola’s film, but doesn’t forget to be entertaining. As such, the film mixes interesting, inspiring elements with thrills, action, eye candy and ear candy (a notable score). On top of this, “Lucy” is stylish and “hip,” whatever that means; in other words, it’s got pizzazz.

Some complain that the film is flawed because it’s based on the notion that we only use 10% of our brain power, but this is only a plot device to illustrate that most people are functioning way under their potential and are obsessed with usually worthless things and blowing precious time accordingly. Take, for instance, the people who blow hour upon hour of valuable time watching sports. Viewing a game here or there is great, but these types have lost all sense of moderation. Or how about those who feel they have to numb themselves with alcohol or drugs just to have a good time? They’re, in essence, running away from reality.

What’s funny about this criticism that the film’s based on humans only using 10% of their brain power is that, in most cases, the number’s more like 1-2%. Lol, just kidding. (Or am I?)

In regards to Lucy’s powers illustrated in the film, and the other films noted above, I’ve had my own run-ins with such phenomena. For instance, about seven years ago I was in bed having an intense dream when my wife burst into the room to wake me up. The smoke alarm outside the door was blaring like crazy, but there was no smoke or fire or heat. The potent energy evoked by my dream obviously set it off because, as soon as I awoke, it suddenly stopped. If there was any doubt, the same thing happened the next week. What can explain this except the untapped power of the mind and focused energy?

Another example comes to mind, albeit different: when I was around 8 years old my family and I were walking the trails of Theodore Wirth Park in Minneapolis when we came to the edge of a baseball field. As soon as we entered the outfield somehow I just knew that the current batter was going to hit the ball and it was going to hit me right in the face. I knew this but I didn’t know how I knew it. I just knew. Next thing you know the batter hits the ball high into the air — it was like slow-motion — and it came and hit me right on the cheek! (Good thing it was a softball, huh?). How did I KNOW this was going to happen? I don’t know, but it’s pretty amazing and it shows the power of the mind and spirit to warn us, which some call intuition.

Less spectacular is something that I experience every day with my wife: One of us will be thinking something and give voice to it and the other says, “I was thinking the exact same thing.” What’s going on? We’re picking up each other’s immaterial thoughts, otherwise known as telepathy. What if we developed this further? Other paranormal phenomena featured in the story include psychokinesis, extraordinary empathy and what the Bible calls “the word of knowledge.” Although they’re exaggerated in the film, they’re REAL.

“Lucy” is inspiring in that it’s an encouragement to GROW UP. As Lucy evolves she stops at her apartment and runs into her roommate, who’s the typical bimbo party girl who spends too much of her free time “partying” and pursuing a “cute guy with nice buns” (or however she puts it). Not that there’s anything intrinsically wrong with these things, except that these people obsess over them and they become their PURPOSE for living. Whatever happened to “All things in moderation”? The beginning of the movie shows that Lucy was just like her roommate but something happened and… she GREW UP.

My praise of the movie’s philosophical and theological ideas shouldn’t be interpreted to mean that I agree with every jot and tittle. It’s a sci-fi/thriller blockbuster, after all; it’s just that this one has more interesting ideas than most. Secondly, who agrees with everyone about everything? Is that even healthy?

Needless to say, I love “Lucy”!

The film doesn’t wear out its welcome at a mere 1 hour, 29 minutes, and was shot in Taiwan, France and a German airport.
